Our group went 3rd week of September again this year. 9/22-27. We caught loads of bass. But not one walleye despite using various approaches and fish finders. We were on Red Rock, Alpine and Seagull.
My question is this: Would walleye fishing be better the first week of October? (Two weeks later then we went this year). Water temps were 65-70 degrees and air temps were low 80's.

I went the same week and caught lots of walleye in 10-20'. Definitely needed to go early morning and late afternoon. This year was a little warmer. I read the same water temps as you but they are usually in the low 60's the last week of September.

The fall is so variable because from year to year the weather is so variable.
The walleyes put the feedbag on in the fall but also food is at it's most plentiful so you can end up with Thanksgiving Analogy...if you find them feeding they will stuff themselves and bite aggressively on everything, but once they are full they might just lay around all day and won't be willing to move much to eat.
Also remember baitfish are bigger this time of year so bigger jigs and lures tend to attract a bite more. My analogy is if you are hungry do you run across the room for that Happy meal or the other side of the room where you see the french fry :)
As someone else noted Dusk and Dawn are superior bites--the baitfish are more active and stimulate a feeding response. Find running water, find a reef or point surrounded by deeper water.
If all else fails troll deep diver cranks like you are looking for Lakers. Walleyes love Ciscoes this time of year to pack on the weight. THey'll cruise the depths to find those schools for an easy meal.

We had a couple of guys that are pretty much "pros" on fishing. They tried everything but no Walleye. You could see them on the fish finders on the bottom but they would not bite.
We are looking at 9/28-10/3 next fall to get some cooler temps. Will also work on fishing dawn and dusk
Thanks!
