I did the same thing, only I wrapped rope around the handle then covered it with duct tape. Better than the original handle at least, and if I leave it at a campsite, someone will probably return it because it's so ugly.
I've almost pulled the trigger on a nice Gransfors (or other brand) hatchet about 100 times, but...the old Gerber does a fine job and I don't worry about it.
For me, it is exactly opposite; I tried to justify the Gerber as a tool I will use infrequently so it really wouldn't matter that it was light and cheap. The problem is it just isn't satisfying to use. I love my Gransofors Bruks hatchets and axes. Those are the tools that are worthy of their weight in my pack.
