After last years first (and fantastic) Quetico trip, I'm eagerly planning my second trip for the first or second week of June 2026. I'm curious if any of you more experienced Quetico folks have any opinions on the relative merits of the following two trip ideas re: solitude, fishing, and scenery. I have a passport, but no RABC.
I am weighing two 6-night trips: (1) Beaverhouse - Nym via Quetico, Jean, Oriana, Jesse, Maria, Pickeral, Batch; or (2) Bottle Portage - Crooked, Argo - Roland chain - Crooked - Bottle.
I have been focused on Route 1, with a plan to spend one night on Quetico, two on Jean, two on Jesse, and one on Batch. Recently, I've have become interested in Route 2. I understand the extra tow expense with Route 2 and that it has some burn area, particularly if I looped down through Roland. That trip would probably be something like one night on Crooked, three on Argo (with day trips to Ballard and Darkwater) one night on Roland, and the last night back toward Bottle.
The idea behind cutting off Route 2 and heading through Roland is solitude. I imagine fewer people have been through there since the '21 fire and that appeals to me. But, that assumption could be unfounded, as it seems more Q visitors could get pushed to the SW quadrant with the RABC pause. I read a report on this site indicating McAree was quite busy last year, and I have no interest in that. Another reason to come back via Roland.
Any thoughts/experiences on these two routes would be a welcome way to help pass these short, cold winter days!

We were there at peak July last year, and not early June as you are indicating. Nevertheless the northern lakes were a fair bit busier last summer than expected basis past trips up there. I think this was almost certainly due to the RABC suspension, and the Pickerel area was particularly busy due to it being the closest northern access point for those coming Grand Marais and the north shore. Russell too was pretty full.
That being said, even at peak July we never labored to find a campsite, and it was a superb seven days in the northern part of the park. I would suspect that the Beaverhouse entry was less busy than French Lake that July, but I can't say for sure.
We did almost exactly your same proposed trip (entered at Nym and not Beaverhouse) in mid-June in 2024 and went three days without seeing another paddler in Oriana/Jesse/Maria area, but that was before the RABC suspension.
I guess what I'm saying is that you probably shouldn't expect total solitude in the northern part of the park until the RABC permits are back, but that it shouldn't be bad in early June. Certainly not Knife Lake-bad in the BWCA.

Should you choose to do the Argo/Rolands trip drop me an email botiejigs@yahoo.com
I have lots of info on that area, dated but good stuff nonetheless

Take your journey and never look back. Life is too short, not to enjoy the necessities of the north woods.

You probably can't go wrong. Whichever one you do in 2026, do the other in 2027...
I did Beaverhouse to Nym the first week of September. It was a beautiful trip. Jesse lake was definitely a highlight. After passing a few canoes near the Beaverhouse entry, I didn't see another person until the Jesse to Maria portage (I did see several occupied campsites on Quetico, but didn't see the people). Going after Labor Day and a nasty weather forecast likely contributed to how few people I saw, but keep in mind "busy" for Quetico is nothing like busy for the BW.
I didn't fish as much as I had planned due to nasty weather, but consistently caught fish anytime I trolled while traveling. Twice I ended up reeling in my line because I was catching fish at a rate that drastically slowed my progress on a cold and rainy day.

I have a few Quetico trips under my belt now and have done both of those routes, though with some variations. To me they were both equally special.
If you go the Argo route, you cannot pass up Darky too, especially if fishing is a goal of yours. McAree was busy but worth it to see Rebecca Falls. The kids loved treating the falls like a water park, jumping off the rocks into the falls and letting it carry them out into the lake (with lifejackets, of course).
Your Beaverhouse route is significantly longer in distance, right? My trip there was an out and back to Jean with a day trip to Burntside. I'm one of the people who contributed to the increase in the northern entry points. I had originally planned for the falls chain but couldn't because my partner needed an RABC (I had one still). This is a fisherman's trip. It was less busy. We went in June and stayed at the narrows on Jean. We went a couple of days without seeing anyone and we were fishing up and down Jean all day.

Thanks for all your responses. Last year's Quetico was my first canoe country trip. Shied away from the BWCA because reports make it seem like there are more people than I prefer on a backcountry trip. Sunburn's idea to do one in '26 and the other in '27 sums up the reality of the situation as that first Quetico trip has me hooked for life.
Eagleriver, based on your experience, would you say 6 nights from Beaverhouse to Nym would be ample time to have time for fishing and leisurely afternoons by camping a night on Quetico Lake, 2 nights on Jean, 2 on Jesse, last night on Batch, then out. I know wind can be major, unpredictable issue - last year's trip in early June had strong and unusual easterly winds the first two days ... so you never know.

That appears to be around 50mi of paddling depending upon how deep into Jean you go, so 6 nights would be easily enough time I'd think. You'll likely see some paddlers on Quetico and again on Batch, but you should find some solitude (and good walleye fishing) on Oriana and Jesse. A more ambitious journey would take you down into Sturgeon from Jean and then back up via Lonely/Walter/Elizabeth. We didn't see a soul on that leg in June '24, but you might be pressed for time and you would miss out on lovely Oriana.
