As we approach permit day on Jan 28th, we are publishing a review the the 2025 permit bookings and cancellations. Our first focus is on the lower Gunflint Trail entry points. Feel free to post follow questions for additional data or comment.

Most Competitive:

East Bearskin (OP): 17.9% avg, 80% booked Day 0
Duncan Lake (OP): 18.3% avg, 85% booked Day 0
Lizz & Swamp Lakes (OP): 18.8% avg, 78.6% booked Day 0

Most Available:

Crocodile River (OP): 54.9% avg, 19% booked Day 0
Skipper & Portage Lakes (OP): 51.8% avg, 14.2% booked Day 0
Morgan Lake (OP): 41.8% avg, 25.8% booked Day 0

Overall Stats:

Average 50% booked on Day 0 (much better than motor!)
1,906 cancellations, median 36 days before trip
August tightest at 16.1% availability

Character: Southern access points, generally easier to book than Upper Trail popular entries, good mix of difficulty levels.

I went there with my oldest daughter when she was 11. We entered on July 31, so it was the busy season and we had the lake to ourselves. A group of guys were just leaving the 2nd campsite when we got there and they were the only people we saw for 3 days.
