Looking for information on how long it takes to get down the Beartrap River from Beartrap Lake. We're doing a trip first part of June.

Beartrap to Sunday was two or three hours as I recall. Would guess Sunday might be the halfway point in terms of time to Crooked.

I'm sure some folks have been through there more recently than I have.

Been that way a few times. The first trick is finding the portage out of Beartrap lake to the Beartrap River. The portages along the route are not maintained by the Forest Service but the traverlers keep it pretty clean (at least we try to clean it up when we pass by). In June, plan on 2 to 3 hours from Beartrap to Sunday and another 2 to three hours to Peterson Bay on Iron Lake. You are going with the current on the Beartrap River so that is not a problem. Expect a beaver damn or two.

Sunday Lake is a dandy for eater walleye and the campsite there is pretty good. Don't forget this is a PMA area and you will need a PMA camping permit if you want to stay on Sunday Lake. The PMA camping permits are issued from the Kawishiwi Ranger Station. Just a phone call and only one issued per day.

5 or 6 hours sounds about right. I've only been this way once (6.11.2018) and it took us about 8 hours from Beartrap Lake to Iron Lake proper (~campsite 1837) but we 'lost' 2 or 3 hours between our lunch stop/fishing on Sunday Lake and paddling up the wrong arm of Peterson Bay. When we did arrive on Iron every campsite on the American side was occupied and we ended up staying in Sunday Bay. I was surprised by the good condition of the 5 or 6 portages on the river, which is something I worried about when I was drawing them in on my map with pen. This route gets more traffic than most think. We weren't even the first group on the river that day.

I checked some old notes - took over 3 hours to get from Beartrap to Sunday, having never been thru there before, and I made some mistakes. Return took under 2 hours (single-carrying).
