Good option? It will just be the two of us so he’s in the bow. I paddle a Souris River Q16 backwards so it gets him closer to front and me closer to the middle. I can also get the biggest pack closer to the front this way.
I’ve always stuck to smaller water when I have one of the kids with me so I’ve ignored big lakes. But, it looks and sounds like I wouldn’t have big water if I entered at the Trails End campground and camped on one of those islands after going through the chute of moving water. How well does this hide you from any wind?
My first choice is Baker for this year, but I’m still working on back ups because my entry date isn’t as flexible as the last couple of years and I’m also thinking about future trips.
This trip will be mid August. Thank you.

Seagull is fine. You can look at the wind and adjust your path based on that (You can hug the south shore or the north shore). There are also many islands to hide behind.
We have basecamped on Seagull or Alpine once or twice a year for many years. You'll have a great time.
But you still have to use your head. Seagull is quite large on the western end. A good wind can pick up quite a bit of steam. On that rare occasion, you might have to hang out in camp a half day while waiting for things to calm down...

Spent a long weekend in September on Sea Gull a couple years ago with my boys (8 and 10 at the time). Didn't go down to the west side of the lake, stayed around the cluster of islands between Miles and Threemile islands. No issue but we also lucked out with almost no wind all weekend.
