One of my sons is a classically-trained chef--crispy-skin walleye and bass, morels he freeze-dried and brought, garlic mash potatoes, Kahshahpiwi Lake. Unfortunately I left the butter in the car (he has never completely forgiven me).

On a small island in Kawnipi. Had to make a wind screen with the wood and food pack so I could get enough heat to fry those walleyes.

Summer dinner on Sawbill!
It’s become customary on our trips to do a Spam stir fry the first night of camp….we generally travel a good part of the day, and this is a nice meal to put together in a hurry, if you do a fair amount of prep beforehand. We serve this alongside minute rice.
This was an August trip, my Granddaughter Astrid’s first, and she thought it was cool that we brought vegetables from our garden to the BWCA. Green beans, carrots, pea pods, and onions all made the trip. Tomatoes too, but they were gone at lunch!

Winter Solo on Topper Lake, February 2024. I'm often struck by just how much work goes into getting a trout into the frying pan especially on solo winter trips. If you consider all the planning, travel, pulling, firewood, etc. it's still well worth the trouble!

Can't imagine a better looking dish coming out of the wilderness. My compliments to your son.

We've upgraded to SeaToSummit plates which are pricey but great--the silicone edges flip up to make a bowl and the bottom can be used as a cutting board. Quesadilla with Milton Creamery Prairie Breeze cheese.

My backcountry cooking skills might not be as honed in as some! Here's dessert on a beautiful Swan Lake evening. (One of my top ten favorite lakes!) Late May 2024.
