We have a winter camping trip planned for Feb 19-22. With the anticipated heat wave this weekend and warming temps al around, will there be snow to shoe/ski on next weekend? What do you think ice conditions will be like? Curious what the locals have to say.

Conditions should be great. It's warming up a little but not that much. Supposed to get back to average temps with some potential for snow mid week. As always use caution in areas of moving water and shorelines. I'll be up not long after you for some trout fishing

Hi JJ,

I skied Slim lake near Ely over to Rice lake last weekend.

The conditions were excellent with good snow cover and no slush at all! The Ely area has had more recent snow than other areas.

There was a winter camper on Slim in a hot tent.

I left from a friends cabin near Ely and there is about 20 - 24 inches of ice on his lake.

It was warm (43) but I would assume you will have a good hard crust in the mornings for travel.

Enjoy.

Mike

Probably the best traveling conditions I've had were this past weekend. It got much colder than the forecast overnight so things froze up pretty well.

Might get real interesting with 27 inches of snow starting Feb. 18th Whiteout

Off...looks like an adventure awaits. Decision made...snow shoes it is.

Leaning toward Slim or Wood. I'm guessing the roads thereto will more likely be plowed vs other options.

Sounds like less snow also than eastern part,-still a fair amount

New Question:

Have any of you made ice from lake water? Any suggestions/tips? I might need to have an old fashion and want to have ice. (no judging.. :) )

I have made old fashions using an axe and chipping the ice.

If you brought an ice mold- you could re-freeze the water I suppose.
