Looking to purchase a kayak paddle and haven't seen this covered in the archives...namely, the connector system for a two piece paddle.

Manufacturers have their proprietary systems. Aqua Bound has the Versa-lock and Posi Lock systems. I have heard of people having problems with debris affecting the operation of Posi-lock. The same goes for Accent with its Kingpin system.

Obviously we don't want to be in the middle of a long trip with a useless paddle.

Are these problems overblown? Am I overthinking this?

I have an Aquabound Stingray with the Posi lock system and have had no issues. Use it regularly on local lakes and a number of BW trips. I believe this will be the fourth season I've used it. I do bring a single blade as a backup paddle when on a trip. I'm just one paddler of course so maybe others have had differing experiences they will share.

I also have an Aqua Bound paddle and I've had zero issues with the locking system on multiple BW trips and local paddling. I wouldn't worry about it. On the list of things that can go wrong I feel like it's pretty low risk.

Zero issues with a posi lock Aqua Bound system. Just keep the ends clean and you won't have any issues, dead reliable. Since it is exposed, it is easy to check and rinse out if they do get sandy. Highly recommended.

I have used a bending branches paddle for nearly a decade with zero problems.

Zero issues with either my Aquabound or Werner 2-piece kayak paddles. Of course, the pieces are either together or mounted in the boat for portages so they never sit apart in the dirt.

Very much appreciate all of your input. In addition to this thread I've checked the archives for guidance on paddle choice and length. Going with a 260cm. I've boiled it down to the Aqua Bound Stingray Hybrid or the Werner Skagit FG. About the same price. It really now boils down to availability. The longest Werner I can get is 250cm. But I can get a 260cm Aqua Bound. So Aqua Bound looks like the ticket.

Definitely looking forward to the set-up with the Prism rental this summer vs last year's rental Tranquility with an outfitter supplied grossly-undersized kayak paddle. Learned a lesson. If you're renting a solo canoe with a kayak paddle, don't assume the outfitter will supply you with a quality, appropriate-length paddle. Between the faster canoe design and the right paddle length, our solo should do a much better job at keeping pace with our tandem.

I've used a Werner Ovation at 250 with a NW Solo and Wenonah Advantage and it 's a perfect size for my 5'10" frame

I have the AB Hybrid 260 and really like it in my Northstar Solo. I really wouldn't want a shorter one. I think it is a really good value for the weight and quality. After that level you spend a lot for a little.
