Flip a Voyageur map over and look at the highlighted areas downstream of the proposed copper sulfide mining operation. The lake we’re on is not in this watershed. The waters will eventually meet up, though, but not until they are outside the BWCA. If I wanted to paddle over and take a swim in the potential acid mine drainage, I would have to portage many times. I’ll start counting…

The littoral area of this lake is less than a third of its total area. The waters from at least one Lake Trout lake eventually flow through this lake, but MN anglers are unlikely to legally catch Lake Trout in this lake. This guy is trying to catch pike with a popper. Facing north.

So you could catch one illegally?

It would be extremely difficult

That guy might just be fishing this late in the day but there’s at least three portages out of this lake so there can be some cross traffic here. There’s also a bushwhack lake that can be gotten to without too much trouble, I think. Maybe I’ll check it out next time I’m here.

Are you using the MNDNR definition of littoral zone? Less than or equal to 15 feet?
