sedges: "Are you still in Indiana? Do you get Painted Bunting there every year?"
Yes still in Indiana. The Painted Bunting is a first for me. Indiana is not their normal habitat area. They are more of a Southern bird, so I was very excited to see one at my feeder. Thanks for asking.

Painted Bunting is usually a coastal bird in the SE. I see it on trips to the SC coast, even in the winter when many of them have migrated further south. Though I see a lot of coastal plain birds up here in north GA they are mostly wading and shore birds coming north in the summer.
I can't keep feeders out in the summer due to bears, but I will be keeping an eye out for painted bunting. Need to learn the song and call!

I've only seen it the one time in my backyard. It's been unusually warm here in NW Indiana, so I figured he just followed the warm push of air north. Once he figured out it was Indiana he GTFO and headed back south. Supposed to frost/freeze this weekend here so a lot of the migrating birds are in for a surprise.
