My three sons and I took our first trip, Entry Point 16 Moose River North, to Agnus, and had a base camp on Agnus. The entry date was June 7. We paddled out on the 11th. There was a burn ban while we were there (not really a big deal), but it was hotter than expected when we planned the trip. We did venture to Lac La Croix.

We had one great night of fishing. It was our first time fishing for walleye, pike, and smallmouth. We are great at fishing farm ponds in Kansas. We did not slaughter the fish, but we do want to do it again.

Goal is similar to this year - get a base camp and fish from there. I'm not asking for anyone's honey hole. Just suggestions on a good five-day fishing trip with camping. Stick to the same place or try something new.

BTW, the weather there now seems a lot cooler - with lows in the mid 40's last week.

We did learn a lot in terms of what to bring and not bring.

What are your trip dates? The dates could help recommend where fishing options would be better. If it's July or August, I hope you aren't picky on what you catch. :)

Would go the 1st or 2nd week in June.

Push on a little bit further and grab a site in Boulder Bay or Tiger Bay. The area has great fishing and very nice campsites. Boulder Rive fishing was quite good in early June last time I was there. Many of those nice campsites sit on drop-offs and we caught a ton of walleyes just lazing around camp bobber fishing.

Definitely worth heading north to see the pictographs as well.

Try something new. Drive a touch further to entry 14...LIS north...and go up to Shell. Fish Shell and daytrip up to Lynx.

Hello from a fellow Kansan! We have been through that area a few times over the years. Agnes is only a fair fishing lake imho. I agree with the other poster advising you to go a bit further to LLC. It has really great fishing, and for much larger fish. It takes some getting used to the clear, deep, infertile water of the Canadian shield from a stained, highly fertile Kansas water perspective. Other than May-early June, the fish will be deeper than what you are used to, often 15-30ft deep in the summer. If all you do is pound the shoreline, you will mostly catch small male smallmouths and hammer handle(small) pike after spring/early summer. Just go in a bit further for better fishing.

My recommendation would be to decide the general area you want to go first, then find the fishing hot spots that you want to focus on. The fishing is good enough across the entire boundary waters as long as you know what you are doing. Some lakes are better than others, but generally if you can find sunken reefs, moving water/rapids, holes, or saddle back humps between sections of deeper water, you can catch fish. The lake finder app on the DNR website is great for lake topography and fish counts. I've never had to go more than a lake or two away to find fish.

I do highly recommend going somewhere new. I try to make every trip something different. The only real repeat I've done is when I brought my kids out for my daughter's first trip a couple weeks ago, and it had been 10 years since I had last gone to that lake. Even got the same campsite.
