My daughter has never been to BWCA (she is 22) largely due to her not wanting to stay in a tent for 4 days. She needs the shelter of a cabin and an enclosed bathroom with a shower. So this year we are going to be staying at Voyageur Canoe Outfitters, taking day trips into the surrounding lakes. When I searched this site I wasn't able to find much information (maybe I am searching wrong?)

I was wondering if anyone could give some insight on the area and where some good spots might be to fish from a canoe. We are looking to stay away from boats, which I know some of the area allows. She is very nervous to be in a canoe for the first time and my wife and I are just beginners in the canoe.

Any information you wouldn't mind sharing would be greatly appreciated!

VCO is your best bet for this info. I purchased a Sag map from them when I was staying in one of their bunkhouses a couple of years ago and they walked me through a bunch of spots and even marked up the map for me before I left. A+ / 5 Stars for VCO. Their bunkhouses across the river are pretty cool but I think the only shower house is near the main lodge.

I have been in contact via email with them but thought maybe someone would be able to give me some advise that has been to the area. I am a plan way ahead kind of person, I am already planning next years BWCA trip, looking at route options and campsites on those routes.

Seagull has been one of my favorite lakes for sixty years. Stick to the north side of the lake and you will find plenty of shelter from almost all wind directions except the south. If a moderate to strong south wind is in the offing, find another place to paddle:

I've stayed at the VCO cabins on the West side of the river a couple of times and can share a few general notes.

There is a bathroom/shower house roughly in the middle of the cabins/bunk houses on the West side of the river if that's where you end up staying.

Most of the immediate surrounding area will have some type of motor traffic allowed. You have to get out into Sag quite a ways to get past the motor zone, Sea Gull isn't quite as far but I haven't run into issues with motors while in the canoe. These are large lakes so pay attention to the wind.

If you are planning to go through Gull Lake to get to Sea Gull, make sure you portage from boat landing to boat landing (the VCO crew can help point it out on the map) rather than the short portage around the falls marked on maps that cuts through Trail's end campground. The other option is to drive to the Sea Gull Lake public water access.

A nice daytrip is going from VCO to the Sea Gull Palisades and back. Take the short hike to the top of the palisades and fish between the island channels along the way.

Paddling around Gull Lake just off the outfitter is scenic/partially in the BW and will help get the group comfortable in the canoe. Remember to grab day use permits before you take off. The outfitter will have them, or you can get them at the public boat access.
