We're scheduled to enter on August 1, 2026 at Island River (EP #34). I've learned this isn't really a question to ask on social media, but I'm hoping this community of experienced and thoughtful paddlers might be willing to share their perspectives. Based on what you're seeing from the current fire situation, official updates, weather, and your own experience, what do you think the prospects are for an Aug. 1 trip?

I'm trying to set realistic expectations-I don't have my hopes especially high, but I also don't want them to be lower than they need to be. I don't mean in any way to minimize the incredible work of the firefighters or the impact on BWCA communities and residents; I'm simply looking for informed opinions from others who are following the situation as closely as we are. Thanks for any thoughts you're willing to share.

In your case I would be cautiously hopeful and watch the next few days. Based on some of what SNF staff have said, it sounds like they're looking/hoping for opportunities to reopen certain areas, and EP #34 is a ways away from much of the fires. I can imagine a possibility where in the next few days they reopen certain entry points after an upcoming future date.

But, will that include EP 34 and will it be in the next ten days? I just don't know for sure. I've got EP 16 on Aug 17 and a number of friends who will be flying into MN are asking what to do, and as of now, it's just ... wait and see day by day and hope. But things could get worse on any given day.

Anyone confidently predicting the future in regards to these fires and the closure is not to be trusted. That said, the officials did say they're looking into opening areas not directly affected by the fires. Whether that happens before August 1st probably depends on the weather between now and then. I can imagine they're getting a lot of pressure from outfitters and other local businesses to reopen some parts of the BWCA as soon as possible.

I'm kinda done with the BW for a few reasons, but I would check out the Lake Kabetogama area. There has to be all kinds of opportunities there. Just guessing tbh. I'm doing a deep dive into Wi trips,
Funny I did a couple trips from the Island River EP about 10 years ago, just because I knew how to catch walleyes in the pools. It wasn't for the scenery, the whole area was charred to a crisp, not so aesthetic. Not a big fan of burnt out areas.

I’m in a similar situation with a trip planned for Aug. 2. I’ve been following the situation closely as well, and have no clue whether the parts of the BWCA and Quetico we were planning to visit will open up on time. There are just too many variables and unknowns, like even if the forecast calls for rain, will it actually rain, and rain enough to extinguish any of the fires.

For us, having some type of camping and paddling trip was important, and we knew it would be difficult for us to pivot at the last minute if things didn’t open in time. So we made the decision a couple of days ago to cancel our trip and make reservations for a different area away from northern Minnesota and Ontario where we can camp, paddle, hike and see some new sights. This isn’t to say that I think things will not open up by the beginning of August; they might open or they might not. We just needed some certainty now about where we’re going, so it worked best for us to cancel our BWCA/Quetico trip before waiting to see what happens closer to our departure date.

Yes! My brother is verifying his flight in next week, clearly not knowing about the fires. And I've been trying to coordinate a trip with him for years.

I am in the same boat. I have a Seagull permit for August 5. I did give our trip a 20% chance. Now, I don't know what to think.

Here are some things that I think I know: 1. All the fires will not be 100% contained by August 5. 2. There will be minimal risk to Seagull/Alpine since they were burned 15 years ago. 3. The area and outfitters really need the area reopened. 4. Opening some entries would add massive logistical and managerial tasks to the Forest service that is already stressed out.

If you don’t mind, please share why you are kinda done with the BW, just curious. I understand if you don’t want to share.

I've done 25-30 trips, mostly loops, 4-5 solos. Just kinda done with it, been there done that kinda thing, the wonder wore off. I think my portaging days are behind me, was struggling a bit on a June trip tbh. BW is kind of a hassle anymore, too far to drive 9-10 hours. I am going on 3 canoe camping trips, one a month, in Wi. 4-5 hours drive and a lot of fun if you get into it. Paddle into your site and they are nice. Have my sites reserved, going to Willow on Thursday, great spot.

On the Ontario Fire Map, all of Quetico is is shaded blue - indicating a low risk of forest fires. It was red for Extreme a week ago.

Of course this is day to day, but my thoughts are that you’ll be able to do your trip. What’s your planned route?

I'm scrambling to find a place to land with 7 church youth who were very excited to paddle. I was excited to take them! Some were first-timers.

We are searching for options like a lot of people--for us it was August 6. We will see what we can find.

This is just an opinion but I think Island River will be open by then. The fires haven’t been in that area. The Little Knife Fire hasn’t grown, and it is still quite a ways away.

But really if this is creating anxiety, (to cancel or not cancel the flight) I’d cancel the flight if you don’t know for sure the entry is open when his deadline approaches. That’s just me. There are just too many unknowns to accurately predict. Making the decision would create more certainty in your situation. I personally don’t like hanging out in Limbo. YMMV. When my Q Permit for 7/26 got cancelled on Monday, I was disappointed but also relieved that I finally knew and could pivot.

If it opens up, then maybe try to grab a flight…maybe won’t work or maybe it will be cheaper last second? But you’d have certainty again…

There is no hurry to cancel the permit in this situation.

Scat, good luck on the Willow. This will be our alternative to the BW this year too.
Keep me posted on how you do fishing as we will be heading up in a couple of weeks.
