Hi all,

We have Sept 3rd permits out of Moose Lake. We have a group of 5 with 2 coming from out of state. Given its proximity to Camp and Little Knife fires, how should I be feeling about it being open? Im open to making other plans, but have had this set since late winter and have developed an itinerary. We originally intended for a Knife Lake trip, but with that fire, would turning west at prairie portage be an option?

Any insights or premonitions about what the future may hold are appreciated.

You’re in a better spot than us - we have Aug 27 out of Moose but I’m remaining optimistic. The weather looks good for fire suppression this week on top of little fire expansion in the last week (I think). Plus, we are over a month out, so time is on our side here.

All that said, we are probably going to start brainstorming back-up ideas in the coming week if we don’t hear any rumors/news about even day-use in the Ely area.

This is just speculation on my part, but I would guess that both Knife and Basswood might be the last areas to be opened to the public this year. If I were you, I'd start planning for another entry point.

Unfortunately, it’s really too soon to tell.

Anything we tell you is complete speculation. With a lot of cooler temps and rain I think it could change, but if I was betting…I’d bet that area will be closed still.

I’d look at entry points that are proposed to be opened before others.

Way too soon to tell. I would plan to avoid burned areas though, at minimum. Highly doubt the burns themselves will open this year.
