Has anyone been through Baker since things opened back up?
Specifically wondering about the narrow area after the portage from Baker to Peterson. II’ve only been there in May and June when water levels were high enough to paddle through. Iv’ve seen/heard stories about needing to walk the canoe through in low water and II’ve seen videos of it in really low water where they had to carry everything over the rocky river bed like a long portage. That could be extra troublesome when it’s just me and a 7 year old.
I won’t change plans, but may pack extra light if I know it’s really bad. I will also ask the outfitter when I pick up the permit.
I just thought I’d check and see if anyone has been there recently because we were just at Rockwood for a week and Poplar is really low, even for August.
Thanks

I don't have recent intel but I would be prepared for difficulty in that spot. I was through there in early June and the water was low enough that we could only paddle through with extreme care, and then still had a couple nasty scrapes with the boulders when coming downstream with the current.
I would be surprised if the water isn't significantly lower now, given the conditions for the last couple months.

Water Levels are low up here as well due to this years unusually long heat spell it's also a bad year for Blue Green Algae in our lakes. With TBT News reporting of the toxic BGA showing up in Dog Lake, Shebandowan Lake, Hawkeye Lake, Kaministiquia River etc.. Historically uncommon but becoming more common with climate change something else to keep in mind these days...

That is horrible to hear the algae can actually grow up there. It's now a given on my metro lake by some point in the summer, but I hadn't thought it was able to make it that far north. What a bummer.

It definitely added to the adventure. There were 2 spots after the portage where we couldn’t get through and had to punt and get very creative.
There was also a spot before the portage to Kelly where I had to get out and push the canoe about 10 feet with Bruin and the gear still in it.
We had a great trip and he got to have a walleye fish fry.

Its been there 1000 years. It just- may be getting worse and type of algae. Also prolonged falls with aquatic plants dying as usual in the fall it releases a lot of nutrients into the water, but recent years falls stay pretty warm thus a ideal condition for algae to grow after plants die.
Get further south the blooms get so bad, I swear you could collect it and use it as a paint-seen that now even in late October.
