Currently my wife and I use a small Sony AM/FM/SW radio that we purchased in Andorra in 1995. It has worked well but it's wearing out and I'm looking to upgrade.

I would like to purchase a device that has AM/FM/shortwave and weather radio capacity. I want the ability to monitor the weather at any time. I want it to be battery powered. Obviously small and lightweight, good quality from a well-known manufacturer. Price is not an issue… I will pay for quality

Any suggestions regarding specific radios or manufacturers?

New for us this year we took a pair of Baofeng UV-5R Mini Ham Radios. Small, light and not too expensive, yet very powerful and customizable. Check YT for programing these radios, it's not hard. Program the GMRS frequencies and you don't have to use the Ham ones. I am interested to see what other recommendations you get, but these fit the bill for our group and allow us to communicate for fishing and scouting.

I am considering this. It seems to have everything I want.

Midland has a small, solar charging multi band with flashlight and charging outlets. I have always been able to find a station and it has lasted over 20 years. I would not go without something.

Personally I've been very pleased with the Sangean DT-400W.
Super lightweight and packable, and the build quality is excellent. We can pick up the weather anywhere in Quetico or the BWCA with this.

I saw the Midland ER10VP at my local Ace Hardware for $35 and have been considering buying one. Would have been nice to have this past week. I think I have had enough "experience" now that I will definitely have something for the next trip, whether that is a satellite phone or a radio or both.
