UPDATE: TROOPER WAS FOUND

Thank you all so much for your kindness and generosity, we are blown away by all your recommendations and idea, and thoughtful words. What a wonderful community. Thank you again!

==================================

Hello - My name is Bess Donoghue. My sister Millie is currently on a trip in the Boundary Waters and has lost her dog Trooper. Trooper is about 40-45 pounds, mostly black fur but has brown paws, and a brown dot above each eye. I've tried to enclose a photo in this message that was taken of him this morning. He's wearing a light blue life jacket.

He was last seen near Parent Lake. If you see him, can you please call me at 847.254.1626? My sister is struggling with her phone reception. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I would contact these people immediately. I hope she finds her pup.

I would also contact the Outfitters in the area, the Forest Service, radio stations, fire departments and the Police.

Very good to hear.

To be honest, you should consider yourselves lucky, a majority of dogs lost in the BW don't come home. There have been some high profile rescues, but I feel a majority don't make it.

Give that dog steak and eggs for dinner tonight.

Glad Trooper was found.

12-20 dogs go missing in the BWCAW every year. Most never return.

Happy to have found Trooper. He quickly earned the trail name, Manifesto, when we found him.

He enjoyed his post trail Dairy Queen (just the patty) with us in town!

We found him on the Snowbank side of the little pond halfway between Boot and Snowbank (sorry don't have my maps in front of me right now).

Neither did I. You have to search multiple sites, such as Sheriff’s office, Animal control…dogs run off due to loud noises (thunder, tree falling, yelling, Aluminum canoe scraping), curiosity, fear, tracking new scents/animals. A decent percent of dogs when they get confused they just run as far and as fast as they can. It can be miles before they have any idea of what they did. It’s called flight response. It can happen to any dog…I’ve seen it twice on dogs you wouldn’t have guessed in a million years they would run off.

No matter how well the dog is trained or is bonded to the owner. They just run. The flight response takes over and they no longer recognize their owners/family. It’s crazy when you see it.

It’s more likely to happen in an unfamiliar area like the BWCAW than a known area.

Thank you SO much to everyone for their efforts to reunite me with my dog. He and I are so happy to be back together after a LONG 24 hours. He is currently snuggled up under the covers after a yummy dinner and promised pup cup. I am beyond grateful.

I'm relieved he was found - so glad that you're reunited.
