I got the call tonight that a heart donor was made available and that tomorrow will be transplant day! I'm ready for this and have a calmness about the entire process.
Thanks for all prayers and good thoughts. I appreciate them all. I’ve been blessed in many ways.
"See you on the flip side!"

Sending prayers your way. Such a great attitude and so thankful for the person that chose donation. Here's hoping this "other side" is smooth sailing!!

Pete had the heart transplant yesterday. Last I heard this morning is he was getting the kidney today. I have not heard an update yet on the kidney procedure yet. Maybe he mentioned it but they are basically adding a third kidney, not replacing one. Keep him in your prayers and thoughts.

Wow this blows my mind. Sounds so, not sure what the word is now, amazing works, that he can have his organs replaced like that. I have no idea how common that is but for all I know the docs who did it do it all the time. It’s like putting a cast on a broken leg to them. Well I’m sure not quite, can’t even imagine a lot of what that entails. Good docs, good teamwork, gotta be intense.
Keep us posted, you’re gonna be better than new, like the Six Million Dollar Man. Haha that’s an age appropriate reference. Be nice to the nurses! Sounds like you’re going to be making some new friends for awhile.
Cheers!

As a person with some first-hand experience with kidney transplants (not me, but my husband) I believe I can say that the recipient of the new kidney always ends up with a total of three. The new kidney is usually placed behind the pelvic bone in the abdomen, and the (presumably nonworking) original kidneys are left in the lower back, where they just shrivel away.
Still praying for a complete recovery from these two remarkable surgeries, Jackfish. Looking forward to more update with positive information! Thinking of Debbie, too. These first days are so stressful.

Gadfly: "HighnDry: "Last I checked, there were about 27, 600 kidney transplants done in the US (2024)."And there are more than 30K added to the list each year. "
Yes, that's just for 2024 but can be considered an annual figure.

I should have written this better. 30K people are added to the waiting list each year. Roughly 5K people die annually while on the waiting list.
Glad Jackfish was able to get the call some never receive.

I got an alert from Pete's wife Debbie this morning; "Pete is alert and responding to commands this morning. ... They may be removing the breathing tube today if things keep improving."
We all have to believe in something. I believe I'll go paddle.

Looks like it is going in the right direction. Thanks for the update.

He has got to be in ICU and half in a coma. My ex had a really intense thing kinda similar I won’t get into but was in the hospital for 28 days. At least 2 1/2 weeks were in ICU and she was in a coma the whole time, totally out. I’ll never forget walking into that room first time, all these things beeping, blinking, wheezing, sensory overload wow. I was with her almost 24/7 the whole time. When she finally woke up, she sat right up, crossed her legs Indian style and first thing she said was, Can we get high? Like she was in high school or something.
Crazy - Prob hadn’t smoked pot for 30 years. That was a rough go.
The human body is an amazing thing and modern medicine and the docs and nurses are incredible. Just remember you can’t get high if you die haha. Keep going!

I had a complicated open heart surgery six and a half years ago. I was in ICU for several days after the surgery, and was on a ventilator for at least two days before they even tried to see if I could breathe on my own. My daughter who was waiting in the room with me, said it took three tries to get me off of the ventilator (meaning the first two tries were unsuccessful.) I don't remember any of this time. I do remember when they took the vent out and when they asked me if I wanted a popsicle. (I most certainly did!)
My surgery wasn't anywhere nearly as difficult as a heart transplant, so I think we need to be very patient as we receive these updates and realize that Adam is correct: Pete will have a long road to recovery. I am praying for Pete and Debbie during this challenging time, and I really appreciate the updates. Thanks, Adam.

Just the little that I know of these things, you would be looking at weeks or longer. There's post op in the hospital followed by a local stay to do more time with outpatient care. He'll probably have some PT, be immunosuppressed and also have to stay way from folks to not get sick. Linda sounds like she could respond to this better given her experiences.

From what I've heard, I believe they are prepared to stay til New Years.
"What could happen?"

We are probably a couple weeks out before visiting would be welcome. He will be in Rochester for an extended period per the protocol.

I figured it would be a while. I was thinking maybe around Thanksgiving.
