It's too bad the weather didn't cooperate for your first trip - but it sounds like you had a good time anyway. Here's hoping the weather is perfect for your next trip! :)

Glad to hear you were inspired to take this trip. Hope I can go once a year for the next twenty.

The weather can be a challenge.

My daughter and I were in the same days as you, on Pine. My first trip - we encountered that same weather but we all survived! I can't wait to go back! Enjoyed your report - thanks!

Me and my wife joke that "if we can survive the Boundary Waters together we can survive anything". My first two trips were with her before we were married and we were GREEN! I actually used two paddles lashed to the canoe for a portage yoke. Ouch!

your trip report reminded me of my first couple of times. It's a shame the weather was so nasty but i'm sure you will get some great weeks up there too.

My advice would be to definitely get better portage pads and a lightweight canoe can really help too. Hope you go again. Thanks for posting.

My wife and I had the same kind of trip you did on our first trip. I go back frequently (now with our kids) and she decided it wasn't for her.

Thanks for the trip report.

Nice report. I think weather is one of the biggest factors in hooking newbies on the BW or turning them away. Good to hear that you saw the potential despite so much rain. And for goodness sakes - get some new portage pads!!!!

Look at it this way.... this will probably (hopefully) be the worst trip you ever take. It's all rainbows from here! I'm glad you both still see the beauty of Canoe Country and have the intelligence to realize you just hit a bad stretch of weather and will be coming back.

AAAHHHRGH! I kinda wish my first trip was like that...the rest would most undoubtedly better! Instead my first trip seemed picture perfect..a benchmark for all other trips to come! To bad about the pads. Thanks for sharing!

We went in on Kawishawi too and instantly got lost! It looks a lot different once you are on the lake! We also packed way too much stuff, but have learned our lesson. Glad your trip wasn't a total wash out!

Going with your girlfriend's instinct on the first "right or left?" decision turned out to be a smart move. I felt your pain with the canoe digging into your shoulders. I've been lucky regarding not having so much rain on my trips, but then I don't have the experience you do in dealing with it. Thanks for sharing!
