Your description of getting through and out of Lake One using a map made me laugh as it reminded me of our first trip which was also out of Lake One.
We weren't sure we were going to survive with our map reading ability. Then, once we figured out the scale it was much easier.

Nice report. I sit here during the evenings sometimes and browse canoeing reports and just read yours. It really brings back some fond memories of my generally misspent youth!! I’ll never forget our first trip, August, 1978. I recently found my map from that trip. I have had it in a box with miscellaneous cycling and camping gear, through all my college moves, law school, my apartments after law school and now in my second family home. I recall how we also had trouble navigating. We missed our turn into Basswood Falls and ended up a few miles into Canada without even realizing it until the next day.
Falling asleep to the eerie, lonely call of the loon is one of my favorite memories of that trip and every trip since.
I don’t want to tell you something you may already know, but there are many ways to hang a bear bag. And now with YouTube, etc. it is very easy to learn the various methods. I’ve had some odd configurations over the years, but have yet to lose my food to Ursus americanus. As you return over the years you'll get the chance to try different styles.
It is nice to have the other campers on the lake respect the quiet of the BWCA. listening to the woods always enhances a trip!

Nice job outwitting the bears!

Those lakes are hard to navigate normally - and now the water is so low, many "islands" are peninsulas!!

Great report and photos. All my trips have been off the Gunflint. I was planning on doing pretty much the same route as you on my next one, so your report was very helpful. Thanks.

Thanks for sharing. Horseshoe is a nice lake, haven't been to any of the others that you mentioned though. Do any fishing?
