It reminds me of the point on Adventure lake, just nort of the portage from Jitterbug. Somebody had built a large fire and badly scorched two balsam trees up to about 10 feet. This wasn't even at a camp site.

You came upon the Lake Three site about a week after I was there. If I hadn't picked up a bit it would have been worse when you saw it. I used some of the spruce boughs that were on the tent pads for firewood, but a lot of it was green. I mentioned this in my own trip report (see the end of Day 2 at this link: http://www.codabone.net/canoeing/bwca/BW0909_2.htm).
In the grand scheme of things, the damage isn't irreversible. But it's like graffiti - when people who like to paint on walls see it, they think (to the extent they think at all) that it's OK for them to do it, plus it sets an awful example. And of course when that happens in natural settings they ruin it for those who truly love wild places.
It makes me want to talk like a pirate ... arrgghhh!

Hey! I was on those lakes this summer for two weeks after the fourth of July and would just like to point out one thing; there was a lot more fauna there at that point. Similar poor fishing but saw a plethora of beavers, loons, deer, and even a small bear. Horseshoe and Rifle both had AMAZING Campsites so its sad to hear about such destruction. But if you plan on making another trip out I would recommend the rifle lake campsite hands down. Private yet open, best fishing in the area, very nice site overall.
P.S. > nojobro, WHAT IS THAT! I cant even imagine what was going through someone's mind.

This has been going on now for, many years, sadly. People can't pick up their trash, simple as bending over and picking it up, throwing it in the fire or trash bag. Trash scattered in the woods because people won't carry it out, too lazy and stupid. Sorry, I call it how I see it. We sign an agreement, a contract that states we will leave no trace, or at the very least pick up our trash, and not destroy the living things around us that we have come to visit. Not saying enforcement is the only way, but there has to be a better way. THIS WAY IS NOT SUSTAINABLE.
