      blueberry pie?

I'm heading into the Lake One area tomorrow, planning to try my hand at blueberry pie in the jello mold oven. It's a first for me, but I hear it works. I found a source for dehydrated blueberries, but I'm wondering how the blueberry crop is this year. Has the hot dry weather had a negative impact?.
Also, has anyone tried making pie with dehydrated fruit? Any pointers for me?

Do you need any taste testers dogwoodgirl??? I would be willing to do a day trip to your campsite and let you know how it turned out! E-mail me where you might be campsed and I'll stop by whatever day you tell me to try it out-That sounds really really good!

Good Luck-hope the wilderness Berry crop is in full bloom now for your pie.

Hey Bogs, I'll be on Hudson(hopefully)- the pie is a b-day dessert for my young protege, Jules, who will turn 13 on the 29th! Not my son, but he's been going with us for 3 years now....future portage monkey!

Why future portage monkey? I've hung stuff on the backs of younger than him!

No help for ya, but I hope it's GREAT! My first reaction was that you'd have to pick a lot of berries for a pie, but then realized that you have a jello mold baker. That should make a smaller pie and so a lot less berries.

I've had dehydrated blueberries but have taken them only in the spring and added them to oatmeal. My guess is that they will re-hydrate beautifully. Cover 'em with water and give them time. Make your pie after re-hydrating them (that's my guess how to do it).

I like to take advantage of the berry crop, too, but have never tried a pie. I've added them to cakes, scones, pancakes, muffins, etc. all those things where the berries are nice but not necessary.

Anyway, sounds great. Be sure to post when you get back to let us know how it went and any tips you discovered.

News flash...this just in from Lake One....blueberry pie works GREAT in the Jello mold oven!
We did bring dried blueberries, and used them. Very few blueberries seen, and most of those were pretty puny. I pressed pie crust into the bottom and sides of 2 jello molds. About 2 1/2C of dried blueberries, ~1C boiling water, let sit 5-10 min. Add 1/2C sugar and 3 TBS cornstarch, pour on top of crust and bake over a moderately warm fire- a few flames instead of just coals. It baked up pretty quick and was a huge hit as a substitute for birthday cake!

Mark- As far as the "future" designation on my young portage monkey in training....he does pack a fair amount of gear, but isn't big enough yet for the really heavy stuff or the canoes. The year he can portage a full bear barrel, I will be able to gimp along the portage carrying the map and a couple water bottles!

Dogwoodgirl,

Could you post a picture(s) of your oven and lid? I read the earlier thread and am interested in making one. Is the mold steel or aluminum? Same for lid?

I was just kidding 'bout the portage monkeys... I took my nephew in 1994 at age 10, I knew he could handle it. We used a 15 pound tent with 2 straps, he carried it like a backpack. It was also his job to get water (I teach canoeing merit badge, I taught him basic canoe handling skills). One day he was too lazy, he drew water right next to shore... later when we had dinner he freaked out: "there's black swimming things in my Kool Aid!!!" He loved that trip so much he's still talking about it. On the way back to our pick up, he pretended he couldn't carry the tent he had carried on the way in because he didn't want it to end!

Buz- I don't have pictures, but could probably take some. Basically, it's real simple. Just go to Goodwill or a garage sale and buy an old metal jello mold...like a bundt or angel food cake pan but a little smaller and with no fancy designs. It's a round pan with a hole in the middle. Find a cake pan that fits over it. My jello mold is aluminum, the cake pan(lid) is steel. I think mine are both about 9 or 10 inches in diameter.

One more thing....a fairly complete menu to be included in my trip report in the next couple of days!

I just got back from the BW. Not a blueberry in sight! Plenty of bushes, but not berries. Jim and I were there in June and noticed there were no berries then but figured they weren't developed yet. But no berries in July/August either.

In June we were in the Sawbill area. July/August in the LIS/Hustler area.

Anybody see a good crop anywhere this year?

The ONLY place I saw a crop worth mentioning was on my home bushes, which got lots of water through the hot weather.

Bannock,
Sorry I'm 7 months late but I got tracing all this BLUEBERRY PIE stuff and ran across this thread from last summer. FYI ... last week of June we came up portage by Devils Cascade. Went down into the gorge aways to get pics. Hillsides were loaded with big, ripe blueberries. Cool, humid air in gorge? Couldn't find them anywhere else, but I thought it was too early and too hot and dry. Also lots of wild strawberries. Right time...right place.
BTW dogwoodgirl, I'll never be able to eat jello again without thinking of Blueberry Pie!

Dogwoodgirl. I was on Insula at the same time. Your senond day was my last. In my site I added fresh blueberrys to my pancakes. There were two plants. They were kinda dryed out though. I'm also 7 months late oh well. If you go same place next year the week after fathers day I'll be glad to join you. I'll be in the horseshoe Wilder area. Maybe Fire. After reading your trip report.

I tend to go somewhere different every year. This year I'm heading from Brule up to kiskadinna and back around through cherokee the last week of July.
Also hope to do a solo in late July- maybe out of Baker or Hungry Jack, I'm not sure yet on that one.
When the blueberry crop is slim, I usually don't pick them at all, I figure I'll leave the berries for mr bear.

We are usually in the Ely area around the 4th of July. Ely fourth of July Parade is a must see event!! We pick some strawberries, some blueberries. By the way, the rule of foraging is pick one for every nine that you leave for the wildlife. I'd guess mid July is peak for blueberries; What do you think?

My rule of thumb for strawberries are that strawberries have the same amount of flavor per berry, i.e. the flavor is distributed over the giant berries in the grocery store, and they are very bland compared to the field variety. My daughters picked a cup full and we had the best strawberry shortcake in the world!!

Late July for blueberries is right, most years. I've picked them in mid August too...it just depends on the weather and the moisture levels. If we don't start getting some snow up North I fear we won't have much of a crop of anything...it's a serious drought right now.

About the drought. On what was your 3rd day last year I was in kettle river. The town near moose lake not the river it self. There were planes flying low on the way into town. They were diffinatly fire spotting. On my way out on lake three we saw multiple planes dummping water on what looked to be off shoots of the turtle lake fire. The storm on the sunday of that week was the only rain we saw the water levels dropped by a half a foot the week we were there. In kettle river we got a call from the family. Here in northern indiana we had gotten over 5 inches of rain while we were gone! And we ended the month of july nearing 10 inches. We said we'd gladly give some to minnisotta. You guys are having a really bad drought. I think it's all the people praying for no rain the week they are there. That no other weeks can get the rain.
