I had the opportunity to see several of this artist's paintings recently--they are quite amazing. Many of them are very large--5 or 6 foot range, and even the frames are painted/carved. My understanding is most of the imagery was inspired by trips to BW/Q. He began as a photographer and there's a link to his black&white work also.
