I've stayed on Swan Lake a few times and like it a lot. There's a lake "right next door" to Swan that's not accessible by water or an established portage. I'd like to take a short bushwhack there the next time I'm on Swan. I'm not sure I'm ready for a PMA type trip, but this shouldn't be difficult.

I'm curious..have others done this sort of thing? It seems like a good way to pretty much ensure you have a lake to yourself for the day. Maybe, it's also a chance to throw a lure to some fish that seldom see fishermen.

yeah just get a PMA permit if you plan to camp on a bushwhack lake. They are free. My limited bushwhack fishing experiences. Swamp no fish or lots of small Nortons or largemouth bass. Small deep lakes full of trout--10# is usually big, but ya never know. Sometimes you get a weird stratification of LMB shallow and lakers deep.

The thought and anticipation is the funnest part, "I wonder what's in there."

No matter how deep I go I can almost always find sign of man. Might be a fire ring 50 years old but there is almost always sign. I like to imagine what the people before me thought or found.

SRMan I'm going there in Aug. and I'm going to hit Lac lake. It's about 500 yards away from Swan I've read it's a good northern lake.

If you look to the south there is another lake Tote, I think I might try that one as well. That one will be a bit of a challenge.

I did Yodeler out of Shell last year I have a trip report on it. It was some of the best Small Mouth fishing I've ever had.

I personally think the bushwhacks are the best fishing out there.

Yep...Lac Lake is what I had in mind. Oddly enough, I also plan to be there in August. If I see you on Lac, I promise not to crowd your fishing spot!

Hi JB:

Don't have my permit yet...but probably in that neighborhood. I'd be in a green SR16. I'm hoping for Swan as well.

Headed to Swan in a few weeks. Curious if either of you made it to Tote Lake and how’d you do?

You won't need a PMA permit if you don't stay overnight. I too like doing this. I find a good GPS with topo map of the area is helpful. The going is very slow. Game trails, if you find them, are helpful. It is cool to think that you are viewing a lake that maybe only a couple hundred people have seen.
