Spring must be getting close. The Cardinals are starting their mating calls early in the morning and in the evening.

The Starlings have returned and are eating all my suet.

Robins have returned. I know in some areas that Robins stay year round, but around here it is not the case.

And finally the Black Capped Chickadees' and singing their matting calls.

What Spring birds have you seen or heard so far this year?

I heard the chickadee calls a couple of times in the last couple weeks.

The most notable thing I've seen lately is the gathering of Horned Larks along roadsides. They are one of the earliest spring migrants to my neck of the woods.....always an encouraging sight this time of year.

Ditto That!! We are also seeing flocks of Horned Larks. We have also seen increased duck activity and a pair of Common Mergansers.

I saw a flock of mallards the other day....hanging around an open creek.

This morning I heard the call of a flock of sand hill cranes heading north.

That is truly exciting to me. Spring may come sooner than we think.
