We are heading up this Wednesday to fourtown for our annual trip. A couple guys in the group are going to be fishing mostly for walleye but I think that I'm going to focus on fly fishing this year. I've tried to make it happen in the past but haven't gotten very far. This year I've had a good year around here fly fishing and I'm even more pumped than ever to make it happen.

Anyone have any words of advice on were to look for smallies and northers specifically with flies this year...on fourtown. I've searched the forum and tied up the most recommended flies and have a good batch ready to go. I've got an 8wt and a 9wt although I think I'm only bringing the 9. I just was hoping for last minute advice.

What lines are you taking? I find I use a clear intermediate the most in summer, perfect for trolling streamers above weed tops, counting down to fish deeper, also great for larger nymphs like damsel flies. I would only take one reel though, using loop - loop connections for fast line changes when I want to go back to a floating line for the evening smallies.

Also, the 9wt might be a bit heavy to cast all day...if you can only take one fly rod, I would take an 8wt, but if you are tossing big streamers, bunny strip divers etc, then the 9 will probably be best overall.

Let us know how you do.

Moonman.

Thanks Moonman. I've only got one line right now. Its the Rio Mainstream bass/pike taper. I've also got about 15' of sinking line that has loop connector on it that I was thinking of bringing.

I dont really have a good 8wt to bring with. My guess is I'll only get to throw flies for a couple hours a day.
