A very interesting (and sometimes harrowing) tale of one of the last families to take advantage of the Homestead Act in Alaska. Without much planning or preparation, they moved to Alaska in the early 70's to stake a claim on land that they had never seen. In the end they settled in the Minook Valley, 150 miles from Fairbanks and 75 miles south of the Arctic Circle. There are many stories of their adventures of building a cabin, living off the land and dealing with the animals, sickness and seasonal changes that Alaska threw at them. Many self-taught moments. And like many who experience the wilderness, it captivates their hearts.
