Very nicely done, Arctic. Seemed like a grueling 9 days with very wet and windy weather. I visited many of the same lakes during my recent 17-day solo and hope to have a trip report done within a few weeks. I must admit to missing my sons (ages 19 and 21) every day on my solo trip as this was the first year in several neither of them was able to come with me due to college conflicts. Your son, Everett, sounds like a great paddling partner.

I really enjoyed the report, Arctic. I've been through that entire route on various trips through the years, with the exception of William Lake, so your descriptions were very vivid to me. I hate to think about landing on Burt Lake at that steep portage to Marj with a north wind! No wonder Everett was freaked out. I was wondering which campsite you stayed on on Argo, and also which campsite you were on back in the 90s on Joyce when the trees blew down - we stopped at the site on the big island in the middle of Joyce for lunch a few years ago and noticed a lot of downed trees in an open area that looked like where people used to set up tents (useless now due to the downed trees). BTW, I'm pretty sure the smoke you encountered was from some big fires up around Wabikimi that were burning in late June, not the Arizona fires. At least that's what the reports in Ely would suggest.
Thanks for the report!

Very very good report. I agree about Joyce lake and it seems to be clothed in a mystery.Fished it once and had lunch there on the big island. Such a big lake and I know so little about it. Also the north half of that lake is out of the main canoe route and it just wants you to go down there and check it out. I hope to do that some day.

Thanks for the comments!
Wawasee: Everett loves traveling most days, as I do. Both my boys and I, along with a couple of friends do an annual base camp/lake trout trip in the spring, which is a blast, but a different type of trip altogether.
Ho Ho: I've been showing Everett what I consider to be the best of the best in Quetico, while mixing in some new waterways for me. We camped on the south side of Birch Island in Argo.
As for the site I camped at on Joyce in 1988, my trip journal and memory are a bit vague, but it was on an island, and the site was not too spectacular, as I recall.
Pineknot: There is nothing better than traveling with your kids when they love being there.
When I get old they are under the obligation to take me canoe tripping!

Too bad you had so much rain. I've had trips like that, but, this year, my son Ted and I had calm, sunny days, after the first one. I posted a note on the Private Quetico thread, which you read.
I enjoyed reading this report and, also, the one you posted last year. I re-read last year's again, as I had just been up Agnes and I wanted to see just where you caught that Lake Trout. I know the place, as we camped nearby coming back. Next year I want to spend some time in that Agnes narrows area where you caught that fish. I don't take a fish locator, but I'd like to try fishing for some trout, and, following you tips, I'll try it next year in Agnes.
My son also traveled with me when he was Everett's age. Now he's 40 and carries the canoe. I'm posting a picture of him this year in Louisa Falls bathtub. He wrote an article on Agnes Lake in his travel blog which you can read, if you want, at www.travlingted.tv.
Thanks for the good reading

wow..that was a lot of paddling and portaging for 9 days! i have been over much of that country and some of it is just plain tough and i would never think about taking a dog along.great report but some photos would have been nice.
it's just a level trail thru the woods.

I have a bunch of great photos from this and all other trips, but for some reason I can't load them onto this site. I have an old Mac computer, and most of the times I have tried to upload photos recently it just doesn't work. Bummer.

Maybe you could upload to a photo sharing site and provide a link...?

Arctic: Great trip and report. I enjoyed the details you provided. I really felt for Wilson during those storms! As for the pine needles in the fire pit on Nest signifying no use . . . we camped there on June 11th, if I remember correctly. Sure wish you'd make some pics available thru Photobucket, Picasaweb, etc.! --Goose
Soloing is sweet, but a good partner is "priceless."
