Hey woodpecker - is the Hilton site in Thursday bay #1854 or #1855? 1854 is at the base of a peninsula facing East and 1855 faces West a little deeper into the bay.
When a man is part of his canoe, he is part of all that canoes have ever known. - Sigurd F. Olson, "The Singing Wilderness"

Woodpecker - Thanks for the great trip report. The photos are very good, especially the one of the cliff. I am glad you and your sons had a great trip.
Which one are you in the 1981 photo? I can't tell. Do you still see your friend from 1981 and does he still go to the BWCA?
Glad you were able to return to Crooked and relive a trip from the past.

Yes it really did jog the 'ol memory bank...especially the pictos, table rock, and the lower Basswood Falls with the Canadian portage... oh and the mile portage used to have "lean-tos along the trail where you could walk under and get out from under the canoe for a breather.

The Basswood River, rich in History, being part of the "Voyaguer's Highway", was of specific interest to me on my revisit.....
Being a historical reenactor made the pictographs and the table rock very memorable because of the fact that actual native Americans and French Canadian Voyaguers working out of Grand Portage in 17th and 18th centuries were actually responsible for the two popular sites on the river.
