Hello, I am looking to do my first solo the week after WingNight. I'm thinking I will leave WingNight, Stay near my EP on Sunday night. I want to do a day in, set up camp, stay for 2 days, and come out on day 4. I've been to BWCA 6 times, but 5 were over 10 years ago when I was in Jr. High/HS so I'm still learning a bit. Anyone have a good suggestion for an easy route with mild portaging and preferably smaller lakes? Also any tips for tripping the first Week of Oct? I would appreciate any input!

BTW, because of the time of year/first solo, I would prefer somewhere where There might be a little more traffic in case of emergency. I was thinking perhaps something like Jack Lake from EP 39 if anyone has any info... Thanks!

EP 47 Lizz would be a good first solo EP. Small lakes so less chance of wind issues. Short easy portages get you to Caribou, Horseshoe, or Gaskin (depending how far you want to go) giving you lots of other nearby lakes for day trips. It's a popular area so those lakes should have other people around. It's a pretty area w/ lots of moose around.

I can't help you with EP 39 but it is on my short list for a possible trip one of the first 2 weekends in Oct. w/ a newbie from work if I can talk him into it. Maybe I'll see you there :)

This would be my first Oct. trip so I can't give you advice on that, BUT there are several current threads giving advice on the subject that give great info.

The Lizz Lake area will have other people. It is a great moose area and moose hunting will be in progress. Where some orange!

Herkamer,
I have been on Jack lake, but my loop started at Sawbill and made loop up to Cherokee and then down to N Temperance and S Temperance Then Jack Burnt ans Smoke and back to Sawbill...
If you do put in on Baker, and go up Jack...Just as well go to South and North Temperance and then just turn around and come back and take out where you put in. It would be a nice first solo.
North Temperance is a Beautiful lake and not that big...and Easy portages to get there. You will like that paddle for sure.
