I'm originally from the St.Louis area and have floated many of the rivers of the ozarks area. Last year we did the Niangua from KK bridge to Bennett Springs over two days. Just loved it... I didn't catch all that many fish but being december it was deserted and tranquil. Good report. Living in Iowa I don't float those as often as I'd like to anymore and this refreshed my memories!

LazyLefty, I understand you have some decent trout waters in the north eastern section of Iowa. Some of which are long enough to make a decent float. Have you been out on any of them?

I had never heard of a hellbender before. A quick Wikipedia reading educated me. We have the little 3-4" salamanders here in central Wisconsin. The thought of one of those at 18" is kind of freaky.

I've been on the turkey and it was spectacular, not a lot of trout areas on it but lots of walleye. Upper iowa is supposed to be beautiful but its awful packed most of the times I am able to go (plus its over 2 hours away). I usually go to the wapsi or cedar they are both within minutes and have excellent fishing. Favorite time is late summer low water period cause it keeps the boat traffic low.

I have never found trout waters as spectacular as the norfork as it exits norfork lake in arkansas. Went there for rainbows and browns last christmas and they wanted on the stringer so badly I had to indulge a few haha.

troutdude,
Nice getaway! I know what you mean about the 1000 drunk canoe folk.
We experience the same thing on the Niobrara River here in Nebraska.
it is a beautiful place to go, but a bit NUTS in the Summer with tuber's yaker's and canoe's full of drunk folk. So I also choose the Fall month's for paddling.
I enjoy trout fishing, or fly rods for freshwater fish. Thanks for sharing, I know you must have had a wonderful time!
Nothing like the vibration on the end of a fly rod!
