As so many in the paddling world are now getting into hammocking, I wanted to post this link for those who choose to make their own down or synthetic quilt .
About 8 years ago, I made my own top quilt using this pattern excepting that I chose Primaloft over down for insulation. It's a great pattern, and one does not need a great deal of sewing experience to accomplish making themselves a gear item that they will get good use out of.
A top quilt is a lot like using a blanket instead of a sleeping bag, except that your blanket has a foot box to keep it in place, and to keep the lower digits warm. For me, it is much more cozy than being restrained in a bag. It is also much easier to use. Just get in the hammock, stick your feet in the foot box and tuck in the sides.
There are a few things that I can offer to make the job easier for those who might make one using Primaloft for insulation. The Primaloft quilt is easier, and much less messy. It is also much more stable in damp weather, though a little heavier and bulky.
A good source for mat'ls is Quest Outfitters .

I am just about to make my first top quilt using Climashield. I've made a few under quilts with this and its easy to work with and very effective. Not as soft as primaloft but it is supposed to be more durable over time. CLO is just a bit better with the newest stuff.

I'm waffling a bit but I think I'm going to make this first one a summer-weight with just a single layer of 2.5oz APEX. I've been using a 35deg mummy bag as a TQ but it's just too warm in July/August. This will be about 1/2 as warm.

I like the coverage I'm getting with the mummy bag so for the most part I'm going to pull the dimensions right from it. I may make it a little wider by the feet and just a couple inches narrower (because of fabric width) at the shoulder. That seems pretty close to what I'm seeing others doing.

I'd like to see this when it's done. Not familiar with Climashield. Does it ultimately look the same as Primaloft?

Primaloft has a softer hand than climashied. Climashield is still softer than the old polarguard. It is a continuous filament whereas primaloft is short strand. Primaloft needs lots of quilting, climashield not much, a few loops will do it. Primaloft should drape better but from my experiences with my underquilts I think the Climashield will drape well enough.

I ordered the materials yesterday. If everything comes in I may be able to start next weekend. I will post picks.
