If you dumped your canoe and lost everything but one item, what would it be and why? Any PLB to signal rescue or device to contact anyone is not one of the things you have.

My fire knife. Because with a knife you can build shelter and with the steal match you can build fire. Both needed to survive

this brings up a point that I learned after months of reading here on the forums. . .I define "lose everything" as losing everything not attached to me. That's why I have modified my ditch kit based on a special PDF that has front pockets for med kit, marine radio, knife, etc. . .a shoulder mounted strobe, and an attached back bag that (for me) holds flare gun, thermal blanket, emergency stove and fuel (esbit) etc. With what is just on my PDF I could lose everything else and still have the capability to signal for a rescue, guide them to me, handle medical emergencies, purify water, and eat and have shelter for several days.

Atleast one of my two belt knives. For the same reasons stated above... Used to make shelter, weapons, traps, fire board and spindle and anything else I may need. All made with the use of a good knife.. Never leaves my side when tripping. Even when I sleep.

My neck knife as it has a fire steel attached to the sheath- at least I could get warm
