Gonna take almost 6 year old son, and father in law on a 5 day trip. Looking for a good little route wth some decent fishing. I have my own ideas but was hoping to hear some successstories from others and maybe come up with something better. Portaging is not a problem but dont wanna go crazy with it. More important is large quantities of small fish.
Right now I am laning towards a wood lake basecamp, or possibly the Little Indian Sioux River south. I like the river idea to keep him close to the banks and have the scenery changing alot.

Wood lake is a good option. One portage in, good fishing, and pretty seculded as far as entry point lakes go. The one bad part of wood, is that there are not any 5 star campsites, or premium swimming beaches. A day trip to Indiana might be worth it, super clear water and the west end has a ton of sand (not beaches), but a nice sand bottom for swimming. It also has some good bass fishing and we often see schools of suckers swimming under the canoe.

I have spent a lot of time on wood lake. Tremendous northern fishing! Good small mouth bass fishing and some good blue gills (if you can find them). Also, it has some walleyes, although it is a better northern lake.

I have done day trips into wood in July and not seen a sole. No body camping, no body traveling through!
