Yup. Bring some coffee filters to strain out any extraneous bits. Frying oil actually gets 'better' after its been used a couple times.

I have re-used oil many times, but now I broil over the fire.
Peanut oil has higher temp rating and is harder to scortch, but it is more costly.
Flour will also scortch easily, so avoid it as a fish coating.
Control oil temp closely to get max re-use.
Filtering is OK, but I find a simple cool and decant process is just as effective. Let it cool, then the crumbs will settle. Pour off the oil slowly and leave the crumbs in the bottom.

you certainly can reuse oil and when I am at home i often do reuse the oil several times before discarding it. However, on canoe trips, i typically "pan fry" versus "deep frying". Basically, I am not using enough oil to bother saving for a second fish fry. I get the crisco sticks. I use one stick per fish fry. There is seldom if any oil left in the pan after i am done frying fish.

Crooked Paddler,
I am bringing crisco sticks for the first time this year. I have a party of four and plan on two fish meals. How many sticks should I bring and how much do you usually use when pan frying fish?

I usually just use one stick per meal. My groups are usually between 2 - 4 people and we are usually cooking up about a fish per person. For a first trip I might encourage you to take 2 sticks per meal and see how that works for you. The other nice thing about the crisco sticks is that you don't have to worry about a cap breaking on a bottle of oil and spilling all over your pack!

yes you can re-use it. If you add potatoes to the oil after your fish, it will help clean the oil some, then strain it like others have said and you'll be fine.

Thanks for that tip crooked paddler! Thats a great idea that never occurred to us.
I did have a bottle bust open once in a pack. Seems it was dropped a bit too hard in that perfect spot. Luckily it was in a big zip lok that contained the leak.
Crisco sticks are now on my list.
ps bumabu, I also reuse any oil that is left. I don't filter though. I will just scoop out the bigger pieces.

Totally agree! This has saved me a few times when I have not brought enough oil. Of course, I've also had many trips where I bring too much oil and catch too few fish:)
When I do reuse oil, which I do, I use the Old Hoosier method.
