Need advice from experienced solo trippers. I am packing for a 10 day solo trip soon. I need to estimate how much fuel I will need. I use a MSR dragon fly stove with coleman camp fuel. I am not planning on cooking via a camp wood fire. Meals which will need fuel presently consists of:

Supper and lunch: 6 Mountain House pro-pak meals, 2 quasadilla cheese meals, a Hamburger Helper meal, 1 or 2 Mac and cheese meals, 1 Knorr meal, and a Fettuccini Alfredo + tuna meal.

Breakfast: 6 Oatmeals, 3 or 4 pancake meals (about 2 or 3 pancakes per meal).

Hot drinks: 9 breakfast drinks with coco and/or coffee, a few hot drinks (hot todies) before going to bed.

Other: If I catch fish (ha ha, will fry 2 or 3 meals of fish either with veg oil or bake with tinfoil.

I have in the past taken a MSR large fuel tank(33 oz) and small one (11 oz) for a 6 day trip. Both times they lasted, though on trip 2 yrs ago, ran out of fuel but I found out the small tank (was unaware it was leaking) leaked out on 6th day. Though on those trips, I did not use dehydrated MH meals.

Should I take a 33 oz tank and 22 oz tank (or should I take the 11 oz tank) for a 10 day solo trip.

Thank you for your advice - Prefer you answer for a "solo" trip, not a group of persons.

I did a 15 day solo trip last year using the same stove and fuel. I did a higher ratio of pancake breakfast than you, no hot lunches, and similiar dinners ( I fried fish about half the dinners with a side dish, too). My fuel usage was 3.5-4 oz per day. If I had used the stove for lunches, I probably would have used 5-6 oz per day.

I would think you will be fine with your 33 and 22 oz bottles for the trip.

I think you'll have plenty of fuel with two bigger tanks.

Go with the 33 and 22 oz. That will be plenty, with some to spare for frying up the fish.

I would go with the two bigger bottles. It can rain all the time and you can spill fuel.

I have had solos like that. I hope you don't though! I don't think that you will have so much excess to be annoyed with the added weight.

Or you could bring just enough fuel for your simmering requirements, and pick up one of these for the rest! Then you will have no worries about running out of fuel...

I'm not affiliated, just know a lot of guys like them here & I'll be ordering one soon.

While I think wood burning stoves are sweet and will probably get one someday, the problem with them is that they are useless during a fire ban in the BWCA.

And yes, i know that a fire ban isn't a problem in the B-dub right now so that fallacy is mute.

I plan for 6 oz a day. I generally don't use that much, but.

I like both this and the Vargo. I like the emberlit because it is a little more flexible as to what size pots you can use on top, but I like vargo's assembly and bottom panel better.

Such a dilemna!

Some good info. I'm going Emberlit myself - I love Ti!

Thanks for the review. That matches my thinking. They are priced about the same.

I think I'd add a few holes to the bottom of the Emberlit floor - so ashes could fall out. They have a few nice accessories too.
