I have seen several posts about it but I wanted to throw in my trial this year. Since they stopped making it in the foil packs I decided to vacuum seal it myself. I got three cans and set off to work sealing it in the thickest bags I could find. After a quick boil to kill off any nasties that may have jumped in during the transfer from can to bag I tossed them into the freezer. We took three bags with us and the last one did make it to day seven without a cooler or ice. The last thread I saw before my trip was about the foil pack that they discontinued so I offer this up as an alternative. Does anyone else have any experience with a similar method?

You are boiling the stuff after you sealed it up? Interesting, never thought about that. I too wanted to take some up this year but the stores stopped carrying it. I did however, find it on ebay from a few vendors. After my trip of course.

several of the bags stated that they could be boiled safely so I figured it would be like canning.

Actually no. In canning, the lids are on snug, allowing pressure to escape once temps get above boiling. The bags would "POP". You would have to have one end of the bag open while the product was brought up to temp then sealed, which is gonna be more hassle than it's worth.
I went on ebay to see if I could find some of them packets for you but none. That was a GREAT backpacking item for sure.

I wrote a buddy of mine who works with the usda and mentioned this to him. He said that those foil packets of meat products are usually irradiated to make them safe when the process them.

Food safety is nothing to take lightly, especially in the back country.

Doing like you said would probably work, provided every step you took involved good sanitation practices, but it might be wiser to simply dehydrate and add water at camp. Not to mention, a lighter food pack.
And if you don't have a dehydrator, it's a great justification to get one LOL.

Would I do it? I don't know. Even though it goes against what is considered safe measures, I probably would give it a go if it were to be consumed withing the first few days provided I had at least some way to keep it cool. With the temps that have been up there lately, and just sitting in my food bag, probably not.

For the past several years, I have been curing/smoking/pickling and fermenting my own meats. In fact, I have 3 slabs of bacon ready to hit the smoker in an hour. The things I have learned from a food safety standpoint really opened my eyes, things I never would have thought about.

I love me some corned beef hash, that's for sure. I just don't want to see anyone become ill, know what I mean.

I should do a quick google search and see if there are any other outfits out there that make a shelf stable pouch version of that stuff. I sure there are as its a great pack packing item.

I bought Libby's Corned Beef in a foil pouch this week at Walmart. Trying it out this weekend in a hash.

Just add it to some hungry jack dehydrated hash browns and you're good. Did this backpacking in the bighorns this year.

I'm going to have to admit that those hungry jack hash browns are kicking and have become the base for many a camp meal in the last year or so.
Depending on the type of trip I've even opened the package and placed them in a vac sealed bag.

They are so good that we use them all the time at home too.

That Libby's Corned Beef Pouch/ Hash Brown idea is definitely going into my meal planning file! I am thinking of adding in some dehydrated onions and peppers as well. Sounds like it could make a nice dinner!
