I took Luna for her first canoe ride this weekend. We went out both Sat. and Sunday to different local forest preserve lakes. I'm going to the BW in 3 weeks solo but won't take her. She's only 16 months old so she'll go next year when I won't be solo. She really did great and I hope to have her on all my trips soon.

Ho Ho, nice shot of you and Piwi in the lily pads. How did he/she do in the water? Any swimming going on? My girl goes in very willingly but I haven't seen her swim yet.

quote Ho Ho: "Arctic, what breed (if any) is Wilson? He looks a lot like my sister's rescue dog Comet. Love the pictures everyone!
"
Wilson is half Siberian Husky and half German Shepard. We got him as a pup in November 2008 from the Humane Society in Woodbury, MN (near St. Paul).
Funny thing was, our old dog, Beverly, had just died at the age of 13 1/2, and we went to the Humane Society to just "have a look". There is no way I could go into that place and not come out with a new pup!

Ben, I missed you on the trail by a day or two. I was portaging south into Gebeonequet the last week of Sept. and met 3 guys and a woman. The woman was from New Jersey and was with an older guy. The 3 guys were from Iowa.
They said they met another solo guy (like myself) with a Chesapeake dog. I instantly knew it was you they were talking about when they said you were out for 40 days. They didn't really know the area and didn't remember where they met you the day before. I was camped on Finger Lake so maybe you passed my camp on the north side of the island if you went through there.
Looking forward to your trip report.

Tom, I remember the three guys and the gal. She had like a hat on that made her look like she had little or no hair. (Bad desciption I know). We met on the Beartack to little Beartrack Portage. I helped them carry a pack across and she laughed and ask how I ended up with their heaviest pack. :) The bigger wow is I was camped on the same island on Finger and Tuscaurora B and Vickie were camped on the same site the day before. (South Site) That had to be a close encounter!

We were on the same path just different directions. I wonder where we crossed... I loved that small site on N. side of island on Finger. Perfect for a solo. Here's my views from there. This was right as the weather changed from cloudy and windy to clear and calm.

This is one of my favorites, and a great memory of my now deceased dog Karma. Heading into North Bay towards the end of our 10 day Quetico trip in 2010, the dogs were "in their groove" and ready to go.
P.S. Great looking group of happy campin'dogs you all have!

milo, my six month old puppy on his third trip to the BWCA. this one was backpacking, he loved it, although it was almost winter cold out. for a six month puppy this dog rocks, he pointed out two cow moose just thirty feet from us that we would have missed as it was getting dark and the moose were in a very thick swamp forest. he stayed at our side until the cows wondered away, then he turned and lightly barked in the other direction. bull moose i figured. we double speeded out of there.
sometimes having a dog along is a real bonus. but i think i was carrying about ten lbs of dog food at the beginning of the trip.

When I'm walking mine (offleash) in a forest preserve she will freeze when we see deer or coyotes. She will then turn around slowly to look at me like "hey, do you see what I see??"

Our current Aussies plus another of Cinnamon on her last trip in 2009 on Polly Lake (with Wendy and Lucky).
Cinnamon was the reason I was allowed to get more dogs! All three were rescues - Cinnamon from a shelter in central Ohio and Lucky and Vinnie came from a local Aussie rescue (now part of a national organization: NS4AR.org (New Spirit for Aussie Rescue)).
Here is Lucky and our new tripping partner - Vinnie! Showing that if you wear them out on the portages, sleep is not a problem!

Ducks... I love the pictures !
We just rescued a Viszla 2 days ago and we are preparing her for a summer of canoeing and camping. We will be journaling her trip to the BWCA this year...our first year with a 4 legged companion. We are very excited about it.
Here she is... getting in and out of the canoe (first day with no snow on the ground and her first day with us)

Great pics, everyone! I'm happy to see so many other dogs livin' the good life too!
Here's my canoe dog, Daisy, on loon lookout on Knife Lake. I LOVE having her join us on our adventures! She silently alerts whether for a loon or bear. When she cools off in moving water, she likes to snap her jaws at the water like an alligator. As a photographer, it's great to have her nose, eyes, and ears scanning the area for interesting things I might have missed.

Katie is fairly new to Canoe Country she has 2 trips under her belt. She has good tripping manners, she stays close on trails, and doesn't run up and down portage trails. she does however try to steal my sleeping bag and exped. She does have extensive Wingnite experience
