I think I have my wife on board for a family trip. Daughters would be 5 and 8.

I'm thinking a 3 night 4 day trip would be about the longest we could do. I would like to stay at a cabin for a couple days after the trip, so looking for options there. I've looked at Rockwood Outfitters but wondered if anyone else had suggestions. I'd like to stay on the East side of the BWCA.

Thanks ,

Jonesy

Mike and Lin at Rockwood are great people and a trip entering at Lizz EP #47 is great with kids. It has small lakes with pretty easy portages and decent fishing. My wife and I base camped on Gaskin once and last summer I base camped on Caribou w/ just my 7 year old. I would like to go back there again w/ the whole family (wife, 7 year old, and 5 year old) and base camp on either Horseshoe or Vista.
Trip report written by my daughter I published the above trip report written by my daughter and there are several great trip reports by other members covering the area.

I second the #47/Lizz EP area as well. Lin and Mike are lovely and great to work with!
We did our first trip out of that EP, camped on Caribou and made it as far as Vista on our day trips. It was just hard enough to make it interesting but not so hard as to scare the kids off from further trips.

We liked it so much that we went back again this past June with my nephew from India, and pushed through to Misquah and then back on out.

Another area to look at is the East Bearskin EP and Bearskin Outfitters as your cabin stay. They have resort cabins, as well as cheaper camper cabins in the nearby East Bearskin Campground.

We've found good cabins with decent prices through www.vrbo.com.

I'd also look at the Cross Bay entry point and staying at Tuscarora in one of their cabins when you come out. They usually prefer a weekly rental in the summertime but do end up with stray chunks of 3-4 days available throughout the summertime.

Before we took our kids on their first full trip, we rented a cabin there for a week and just day tripped with them. We love the area and it's great for kids or inexperienced paddlers as the water is small and the portages are short.
