Lake One to Insula - shot a little video that is kinda silly since I didn't get much for paddling or fishing, but you'll get to see what the burn area looks like. Great 5 day trip with perfect weather in late September!

Thanks, Dan. You must have been in about the same time I was. Were the frost pictures around 9/25 to 9/28?

It's a Kifaru 4-man tipi w/ woodstove. I use it mostly in the fall for deer hunting trips, though it's great for any early/late season camping.

Looks like you had a good time. The small tent/ wood stove combination really cuts down on how much wood you go through on a cool evening.

what happens if it rains when using that type of Shelter? No floor. Also what keeps the little critters out? I have been looking at these but cant seem to find anything that address these type of issues.

I've had at least one night in the BWCA with an all-night rain and there was no issue - it maybe seeps in a couple of inches but as long as you are smart about where you pitch it it's no problem (the ground is way more absorbent than people expect). The only mildly irritating thing is that without a liner the condensation on the inside creates mist when rain is pounding on it, but a liner solves this problem. I don't have a liner in my 4-man, but do in my 12-man.

I just used my 12-man this summer while riding RAGBRAI and bugs were never a problem - the tipi gets pitched pretty tight to the ground, and bugs never seem to figure out how to get in through the bottom anyways. They are probably too busy hanging around the closed stovepipe hole taking in any CO2 wafting out (but they can't get in that way).

Tipis really are great in cold weather & once you experience the comfort of enclosed wood stove heat you'll never go back to shivering around a campfire and crawling into a cold tent. :)

Did you holler at me from shore while I was paddling by, Grandma L? Someone did, and their BWCA.com handle was similar to yours...

Sorry about the link fails - I'll update them.

Thanks GrandmaL, but there Dan's photos. I was just providing pastorjsackett the links. They worked fine for me Dan. The links apparently worked for Grandma L, too.

Beautiful pictures and great video "MNDan"! Thanks for sharing.

If I may ask, could you give some details as to what camera and/or video equipment you used?

For the video, I used a Canon HF100 camera. Since then I've gotten a Panasonic HCV700K, and it is way better since it has a much wider-angled lens the the image stabilization is also way better. Highly recommended.

For the pics I hauled in my Canon 1D Mark IIN & both a 24-105mm f/4 L and an 70-200mm f/2.8L. Figured since I was double-passing every portage I might as well bring the kitchen sink. :)

The weight you hauled over the portages must have been incredible?!

Very cool video and pics. It's nice to see the different sort of set up that you use. The weight of the gear would limit your mobility but really nice for an October trip.

You might also post this in the Trip Reports section so a lot of others could see it and not just us solo crazies.

It really wasn't that much weight - the tipi & stove only weigh 10 lbs, and the camera gear didn't add more than a few lbs. I think having the CCS pack helped a lot, too - very comfortable. It was an easy two-pass load, and I didn't feel any less mobile. It can be a pain to find the right pad for the tipi, but every campsite usually has at least one pad w/ good soil to pound the stakes into.

Glad you all liked it. Is there any way I can share it with the regular tripping forum? Or do I have to repost the entire post there?

I think you could just add it to trip reports with a post and "add a link" to the one here.

Nice video and photos.

I have not paddled these lakes yet and it is nice to get a "sneak peek" at the area beforehand.

Nice Video, thanks for sharing.
The cut logs at your last camp on the video, looks like the "fireman"may have stayed there and cut them? They always try and drench the camps sites with fireplanes if they can get to them, before the fire and save them. From the looks of the site, it may be that fireman used this site, and that the fireplanes saved the site.
Thanks for sharing,

SunCatcher

PS, I have a base camp filter like that, I brought it home and cut the filter in half just above where it goes into the bag, then use the big bag to hold the water with the cut off part in the hole like it is suppossed to be, then I got a platypus filter and put it on the line, so the platypus water filter is in-line on the outside of the filter. It works like a champ, and NO MORE slow Katadyn filters!!!
So now the cut-off Katydyn filter is just a holder for the hose.

just thought I would add that Platypus Water filter
