I was disappointed to learn yesterday that Piragis will not have a Souris River Tranquility on their rental fleet for 2013. I had my heart set on taking another BWCA solo trip and really want to use the Tranquility. Is anyone aware of another outfitter that carries the Tranquility in their rental fleet. I know that Red Rock carries Souris Rivers, but they don't have the Tranquility for their solo. They use the Quetico 16 and you paddle backwards. I realize that there are other brands of solos, but I'd really like to use the Tranquility.

Thanks for your help

I too wanted to solo in a Tranquility and found none in the US in 2011. I understood that Piragis had one in 2012, and I tried to sign up to buy it used when I learned that, but I think it was reserved before season opened. Sorry to hear that they won't have one in 2013. Since it was always out you would think they get the message.

SO I discovered the north side of Quetico, much to my delight, and found at least two outfitters with Tranquilities: Canoe Canada Outfitters and Canadian Quetico Outfitters who I ultimately went with.

Try calling Wayne at Souris River and asking which of their outfitter customers have Tranqs in thier inventory. I've tried to talk Canoe Country Outfitters in Ely, my goto outfitters, to adding Tranquilities but no luck so far.

Joe says he does not like Tranquilities and has Q 16's for solo use.

Rented a Tranquility from Canoe Canada in 2011 and loved it. Best solo ride I've found thus far. --Goose

I find it narrow not stocking a rental canoe that people are seeking just because you personally don't like them. My guess is if you wanted to order one from him he'd tell you you won't like it because he doesn't.

Maybe check with Wilderness Supply in Thunder Bay. There are many other solos as good as or better than the TS..( I happen to agree with Joe on this) but it seems he may have cut off some business with suppliers with his opinions.(If I were in business I would watch my tongue more closely) WS is a SR dealer and rents. Its not surprising to me that Joe has not formed a relation with Swift Canoe and Kayak, which has a number of outstanding solos.

I think you're overthinking Joe's reasoning. When I contacted him about a Tranq two years ago, he said:

Hi-
We don't outfit Tranq's very often. There is about 1 solo paddler out of every 1000 tandems so scratching a Tranq up only costs us money. We'll probably have one down here in May but I don't believe we'll be putting it into rentals.

Red Rock

It's a business.

And I loved the Tranq I rented from Doug. It suited my size, experiences, and priorities to a T.
