Joy is a great teacher, but so is dispair. Wonder is a great teacher, but so is confusion. Hope is a great teacher, but so is disillusionment. And life is a great teacher, but so is death. To deny yourself any of those in any aspect is not experiencing life totally.

Oh, I totally agree. Our first trips were before sunscreen even existed! If you have read the report of MY first canoe trip, sunburn was a big factor. But I don't want to relive it. LOL!
As I said, no offense, intended. But I don't want to go there again if I can help it. And now, in my later years, having had several small skin cancers removed, it isn't even a laughing matter for me anymore. But this is a hijack, so I will quit now. Sorry.

If there was a true sunscreen in 1971, I surely didn't know about it, or where to get it. There was stuff like Coppertone Shade that had some protection, but nothing like a real sunscreen as we have today. If you think that the products on the market in 1971 really protected a blonde, fair-skinned person who was out in the elements for a 10-hour+ day of paddling in shorts, I could have showed you some legs that were blistered to prove differently! LOL!
But of course I shouldn't have said it didn't exist. I should have said that the very effective kinds we have now were not available then. Thanks, bumabu, for keeping me honest.
Now. . .back to the photo contest? Aren't the photos wonderful?

Not to keep us off course, but in the early 1970s (and into the 1980s), you were more likely to find tanning aids on endcaps and islands in stores. Back then, everyone wanted a tan. Only the rare, odd birds liked to stay pale.
My parents had friends like that--always covered up, stayed in during the peak of the day, etc. The talk was that they would outlive everyone. They are both long gone. My father, on the other hand, who always tanned a lot during the summers, will turn 80 in February.

quote Spartan2: "What a beautiful bunch of photos! With the exception of the burned legs and the burned shore of Kawasachong (no offense intended, please) every single one of them made me think, "Oh, I SO want to be THERE!" "
Sorry you feel that way. I had a great trip, and a great expeirience with a great friend. So to me this was nothing but a great photo. The shores may be burned, but it didn't matter. No offense taken.

I think it is a WONDERFUL photo! It gives the feeling of the burned area so well, and the black and white is a very special touch that helps in that regard. The drama of the burned area is portrayed in that photo in such a way that it gives me goosebumps. I never meant that I didn't like the photo--just that I didn't personally want to be THERE. We took a great trip that included Kawasachong right before the fire, and I just prefer to remember it as it was.
But I am glad that you had a great trip, and I am glad that you shared this amazing photo.

Very nice. It really captures a perfect evening in camp.
