When you're pulling a sled/pulk, what do you do to get enough grip? I've seen suggestions like applying kick wax on the full length of the ski (you're not really going to glide much anyway), using climbing skins even on flat segments, and modifications to the sled to make it more slippery and thus easier to pull. What works for you?

I have put wax on just a little more than normal and worked pretty good. Best to switch to a scaled model or waxless ski in my opinion if that is possible. I want to say my ski is around 2 inches wide or a shade over. I have had a little more pulling power when needed. Usually on most portages probably someone has went before you and you can walk across pulling the sled because it will be hard. Depends where and how far back in. I have broke trail also many times with skiis on also.
If on a existing trail you will get some glide, also early and late season with little snow glide increases. Than the nighmare situation if you hit slush-the work begins.

Another trick (not having to do with grip) is to use some plastic conduit on your ropes to keep the sled behind you when going downhill. Works really well when attached to a hip-belt.

Winter Camping Trip report

This Trip Report may help. It is one of my favorites. The photos by UncleMoose are fantastic and it is just like you are along with the group. You could study the photos of their skis, sleds and equipment or reach out to one of these guys for advice.

Good Luck Tony.

i use a softer wax but only in the kick zone directly under my feet.
