I'll be buying a lean in the near future, either new from CCS or used through a gracious memeber here willing to part with one. The question I have is what is the difference, aside from size, between a CCS 1.9 sil tarp and a ground cloth bought specifically for a lean? Loops are about the only thing I can think of. Am I missing something?

I looked at mine, the material looks to be the same, but the tarp is sewn together more "sturdy" it is double stitched, has the nylon tape around the edges, and way more tie downs.I dont think I would want to use my lean ground cloth as a tarp unless I really had to. But I also dont think I would want to be stepping and crawling around on my tarp unless I really had to.

The Ground Cloth is sized to fit the Lean's, for example a Lean 2 is 7 feet wide, and the ground cloth is 7 ft wide x approx. 8 ft deep.

Its cheaper.

It has no loops, just four grommet holes, one in each corner.

No center loop or reinforcing at the center.

I got my lean used with the ground cloth, if it wouldn't have came with it, I would probably be using a tyvek ground cloth.I love my lean.

I have the 1.9 oz ground sheet for my Lean 3 and actually use it inside my tents also when I use them. As said the tarps are same 1.9 material as the ground sheet just much much more to them engineering wise.


Just spent 2 weekends "winter camping" in spring with my Lean. Had lots of Qs from the other Scout Leaders about the setup on the trips.
First weekend just set the ridgeline then banked snow on the flap to hold it down. Snow set like concrete. Last weekend was like looking out your front picture window at the sleet and rain coming down. Love my Lean!

All white is a bad choice for winter camping with it though. I will get a colored front awning on the next one.

Tarps are usually made with a catenary cut, and the ground sheets are cut flat.

For 3-season camping, I prefer a ground cloth one size smaller than the lean. That way I can walk in there with my boots on, maybe store some wood, etc. without mucking up the ground cloth. Also, the silnylon is slippery to walk on wearing socks.

A sheet of Tyvek is a less expensive and lighter alternative. Just jab a tent stake through the loose corners and run the other edges over the sod cloth. I've never had issues with water even in heavy rains.

I have 2 CCS ground cloths and they are solid.

Good ideas. I purchased a 9x12 sheet of Tyvek from a member here and plan on cutting it down to fit in the lean 2. I think I'll leave it short of the door to keep the dirt off the floor.

This is where I got my Tyvek. FYI, it comes folded.

Any issue with it being folded? How about packing it up? Will folding decrease its water proofing over time?

I fold mine up a lot as I use it under our tent when backpacking. Yes after multiple uses it will start to get thin in those places but I just get a new piece and use the old one for other projects of things to make. For instance tent entry mats. Otherwise I have also used some white duct tape to cover over some of the holes and thin spots to make it last a little longer.

I like to leave it short of the door, so you can walk in and have a place to leave wet shoes and gear. That is where cutting your own Tyvek would be nice.

That is a good way to do it. When it rains sometimes water blows in a little. This way it just hits the ground and drains off rather than pooling up on the ground cloth.

I ordered two of the bathtub floors yesterday. John was very easy to work with and I'm getting mine a couple inches taller and a little wider for just a few extra bucks. I'll post a picture when they get here.

those are slick

Just to make it clear, CCS ground cloth's do not go all the way out to the door, so there is room to enter the Lean without stepping on the ground cloth. The Lean's are 10 feet deep, and the ground cloth is around 8 feet.
