new to me but they had plain, chocolate, and strawberry shelf stable milk at the Philmont commissaries and it sure was nice after several days of Philmont trail food. Probably not practical to carry much very far but might have a place. I'll probably rely on Nido most of the time.

I bought a carton of Parmalat brand (Walmart) shelf stable milk for a basecamp trip over the 4th of July as I was out of Nido and neither of the Walmarts I tried had the Nido in stock.

I have also used the Horizon brand (Costco) single serve shelf stable milk when car camping for cereal as well. The single serve size was nice because I didn't have to keep the container in the ice after it was opened like I did with the recent larger Parmalat carton.

This is one subject i actually know about and not must rambling. I got to spend a year in Iraq and all of our milk was the small cartons of the shelf stable variety. Be aware that the plain type has its own flavor. If it was available, I usually picked the vanilla flavored which did ok at hiding the 'strange' flavor. If you are using it in a dish, you probably will not notice it. It is noticeable if you are drinking straight out of the carton or in cereal. I use it the first morning to make some campfire biscuits and gravy. It comes in chocolate and strawberry if you have kids on the trip. Once you open it, you have to refridgerate just like normal milk.

I know when our unit returned to Kuwait on our way home, one of the first things I did was to get a glass of non-treated milk from the tap. It tasted excellent.

I found this to be true as well. The kids won't drink the New Horizon straight because it tastes funny but they will use it on cereal. They prefer the Nido to the shelf stable cartons.

Actually we can find fruits and other things when we are camping but finding these kind of things is really hard. I suggest you to keep this with you it will be a good diet for you.

We have been taking it in the on our trips for years. It is good on cereal and we use it to make the gravy for our biscuits. I don't drink milk so I have never tried it by itself.

The commissary (grocery store) at the US Navy Base in Guam carries this product.
