I managed to convinced the wife that I need one more trip this year and what better spot to spend my BDay than in canoe country?

I have three nights. I was thinking Mudro to four town, fairy or gun and back to fourtown.
Any other suggestions? Sawbill or gunflint would be fine too.

Never been, too many people, although I'd bet it is still pretty busy in sept.

I don't think it will be busy that late in the year, so it's a good time to go up there. I suggest doing a loop Mudro - Fourtown - Fairy -Gun - Bullet - Moosecamp - Moosecamp River- Fourtown - Mudro. I did this on a three night solo in June a couple years ago, camping the first two nights on Gull (Gun was full the day I got there). Plenty of time to explore but also a nice route.

I'd suggest checking out entry at Liz off the Gunflint Trail. Head west via Pillsbery to Omega, then back via Winchell, Gaskin, Caribou, etc. Makes for a nice loop that fits your time table well.

I went in last year on 9/25 (Tue). I went in EP#50, Cross Bay, down to Long Island, across Muskeg, Kiskadinna, Pillsbery to Horseshoe and out to Poplar. I saw a group (possibly moose hunters) on Cross Bay and then didn't see anyone until Saturday on Omega. The most people I saw were early Sunday on Horseshoe and most of them were gone by Sunday evening. I don't think you'll see many people until the weekend, especially if you avoid the "destination lakes". There won't be any moose hunters this year.

When I went in Mudro a little earlier a few years ago, the most people were on Fourtown. I did not go to Horse (which I think is probably one of those "destination lakes"). I went up through Boot, Fairy, and Gun to Moosecamp. Except for Fourtown, I only saw a few people, but it was during the week.

You can always check permit availability to see how many permits have been reserved around your date, but of course that could change. I think a lot of people take weekend trips in late Sept if the weather is nice. The weekend of my trip last fall was very nice weather.

Basically, I agree with kanoes and Ho Ho that it won't be that busy then. Maybe on the weekend on Fourtown or Horse if it's really nice weather...

Either of those entries could make a nice trip for you.

thanks for the replies everyone. I think I will likely stick with the Mudro entry and do the loop Ho Ho suggested. The one caveat would be the water level on the Moosecamp river. I suppose I can alter my route if the river is low, or just slog through. Either way I looking forward to exploring some new country.

One factor too is I am going to buy a SR 18.5 from an outfitter in Ely this fall so I'm hoping I can pick it up after my trip.

Enjoy your trip! That's a nice loop. I liked Moosecamp. The middle portage of the three from Mudro to Fourtown should be beautiful then with the fall foliage. The last short one, you'll probably be able to walk up the creek instead of up the rock and down the cliff.
