So my Garmin died and I'm thinking of just using my Droid for this trip and put a new one on my Christmas list. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good free app?

I've been very happy using BackCountry Navigator PRO. It's ~$10, but you can use it for a trial period for free.

CalTopo US 24K Topo maps can be downloaded for free. Waypoints can be imported. On my phone, it works in airplane mode to preserve battery life, but I don't yet have a good handle for how long it will last as I often just use it to spot check ...

Also, I haven't tried to download any Canadian maps.
