this morning...I will do more tonight ...this is a couple hours later

09/04/2013 11:29PM
haven't worked on this since Monday...so tonight I put in a solid couple hours of work.
I decided to work on the breast and lower portions of the bird. Bearing in mind that this is a winter scene and that the morning or late afternoon is very cold, I felt that the bird should have a fuller, puffier look...like every bird does on a cold winter day.
Then I did a light gray/brown wash on the chest and belly to give it a somewhat 3d effect.
Lastly, I put in the first white wash for the snow in the scene...tomorrow I will add some white pine needles, and add more to the snow.

Tonight, I added more shading, and color to the snowy parts, and began roughing in the pine needles...for me this is always the scary, awkward part of the process. I tell myself it will all come together in the end...and i have to repeat it over and over so I don't feel like I just ruined the picture....

I am enjoying reading your thoughts on the process.

this is really great, Brad! you have great talent.

Today, I detailed in the snow and added needles to the snow clump on the right. I used a short stubby puff brush to detail the snow using a stippling action (dabbing color). It created the desired effect, which also boosted my confidence. For the next couple of sessions, i will be adding more details, shading, highlights, and small amounts of snow to the pine needles, also slight shadows to the snow where the pine needles poke through.

Now I have to figure out what I want to do with the top right of the piece...any thoughts? I may or may not use them...however ideas and thoughts spawn other ideas and thoughts.

I'm getting pleased-er :)

The pine bough looks like a freshly fallen limb. What you choose as a background should be from that perspective.

How 'bout a big smiling greasy lumberjack?

today, I focused on the pine needles under the bird. I darkened the lower needles, added raw sienna mixed with naples yellow to the tips of a few needles, followed by a slightly richer green wash on the middle needles. I also added a mix of light gray paint to show light through and from behind the cluster of needles....still a way to go on the snow and the needles...but I'm getting there.

More needles with snow above to the right.

"

That IS the plan...Sunny day...thanks all for your responses so far

Today, which was yesterday (8th) but I work well past midnight.
Anyway, I concentrated most of my efforts on the needles behind the snow, and poking out of the snow. I like the look.
Then I began to add the dead branch above and to the right of the bird.
Looking at it a few other thoughts have come to mind that I will experiment with, before painting them. I will draw it out first on a separate piece of paper to check out if it's what I want or not.
I think it's looking good...I may finish tomorrow.

Well.......maybe I'm finished here.
I will keep it on my easel and look at it a few days, and decide if I'm finished or not.
Then I will varnish it with a matte clear coat, and move on to my next project.

beautiful!

Finished and varnished this morning.

After a couple days of staring at it I added some slight highlights to the bird, and some shading to a couple pine needles and decided I was done.

Very nice! I love those birds. They have become very scarce around the suburbs of Chicago.
