Made it back from my 8 day solo. WCPP (Woodland Caribou Paradise Park) is everything it is cracked up to be….and then some. It has been on my bucket list ever since Doug Grow wrote an article about it many years ago. I went in the Garner Lake EP and visited Haggert Welkin, Aegean, Wrist, Beamish, Irregular, Mather and a bunch of no name lakes in between. After Haggert I did not see anyone however did see a tent on Wrist but did not see anyone there. Even Berseford was abandoned when I got back. I covered over 100 miles in 8 days. At times I pushed my 56 year old body to the limit but wanted to see all that I could. The weather was almost perfect. A little on the warm side a couple days, good thing I had plenty of sunscreen. Bugs were virtually nonexistent. Did not see a lot of wildlife but did see their tracks. The park has done a tremendous job of clearing portages. All were in great condition and well marked. Hanging out at my cabin the rest of the week before reentering civilization on Sunday. I will be putting together a full trip report in the next few days.

I wouldn't call it devastation....nothing close to the blowdown in the bwca. There are some spots more than others with lots of trees down. The younger forested areas did a lot better than the older ones. There really is a lot of difference from lake to lake in the age of the forest. The portages certainly needed lots of work and the crews have done a fantastic job of clearing and marking portages. I never had an issue finding one.

You could really see it in some of the skinny waterways...this one is the the approach going into the first portage out of Haggart towards Beamish.


Some portages needed lots of work in places like this yet the rest of the portage was good.

I'm thinking about this for next year as a potential trip. I'm close to where you are and am curious how long did it take you to get up there? I'm guessing you had to go through Intl Falls for border crossing, right?

I travel up to my cabin on day 1, then cross on hwy 59 (Lancaster) in the morning. I crossed the border at 8AM (when it opens) and was on the water by 1:30. Coming from the cities I would go up Hwy 59 (Thief River)or I29 (Grand Forks)and you could stay in Steinbeck, Lac du Bonnett or Winnipeg.Beresford is a couple of hours from any of those locations. There are some other options. Let me know, I will be happy to help you plan the trip.
